Are Barcelona The Best Team Ever?

Updated on June 28, 2014

The Question

Is the current Barcelona team of 2011-2012 the best the world has ever seen?

The Team

There's no doubt that Barcelona have an amazing team. Their normal line up is this:

......Villa.....Messi....Sanchez

.......Iniesta...Busquets..Xavi

Abidal....Pique....Puyol....Alves

..................Valdes

However Mascherano and Fabregas are possible starters in midfield, and Pedro on the left wing is available and good enough to come in.

Goalkeeper

Valdes is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Casillas is undoubtedly the best, but there is arguments for Valdes, along with Manuel Neuer, Jose Reina and Petr Cech for second place.
Unfortunately for Valdes, he is firmly stuck in second place for the Spain national team. He only has 11 caps at the age of 30. He is very agile around his area and has great shot-stopping reflexes. In the 2011-12 season, he went 896 minutes without conceding a goal, a new record for La Liga.

Defence

Pique and Puyol have formed a solid partneship in the centre of the Barca defence. Both are know to get forward and contribute to goals , and Pique especially is very good with the ball at his feet. Puyol is a big thread from corners.
Abidal is a fairly solid left back, although one problem could be his pace. At rightback Dani Alves is probably the best attacking full back in the world, but at times can be frail defensively.

Midfield

Without a doubt the best midfield in the world.
Xavi's passing and control of the game is second to none, he consistently has a pass accuracy of 90%+, while Iniesta's is similar and he also contributes more in goalscoring. His burst of pace to take him past defenders is a key part of his game.

Busquets is slowly becoming a very good defensive midfielder, with a style of play based around positioning and interceptions rather than crunching tackles and physicality. Fabregas is a ready-made replacement for Xavi and is more than competent filling in anywhere in midfield or even in more attacking positions.

Forwards

Alexis Sanchez is a very fast winger who can both cross and shoot, and after being the best player in Serie A in 2010-11 he earned himself a move to Barcelona. David Villa is one of the best out and out strikers in the world, however at Barcelona he finds himself pushed out to the left to accommodate Messi, although he is still very effective in that position.

And last, of course, we have Lionel Messi. The best player in the world at only 24 years old, only Cristiano Ronaldo comes close. Only 5ft 7in tall but his goalscoring record speaks for itself: 170 goals in just over 200 games, and he is Barcelona's all-time top goalscorer.

The Style of Play

Barcelona's style of play is called Tiki Taka, it consists of short quick passing, movement and patience of waiting for the right moment to open up the defense.
Spain also use this style.

It was made popular when Johan Cruyff was manager of Barcelona and has since spread in popularity, however it is mostly used by spanish teams.
It is a very different style of play to traditional English styles.

Barcelona are the masters of TIki Taka, with Iniesta, Xavi and Messi combining brilliantly for a lot of the play.

Some Of Barcelona's Amazing Team Goals

The Competition

Some people would argue that they are not the best team of all time as they have to consistently win trophies over more than a 2-3 year period.

Other teams possibly deserving of the title of the best team of all time include Manchester United's treble winning side of 1999, Arsenal's unbeaten side of 2004, Real Madrid's Galacticos of the 2000s, Holland's Total Football side of 1974, Brazil's World Cup winning 1970 side, the 2010 World Cup winning Spain side that included many Barca players, Real Madrid's 5 time European Cup winning team or Ajax's 70's dominant team.

Post in the comments who you think is the best team of all time, or if it will ever be Barcelona.

The Trophies

Since the arrival of Pep Guardiola as manager, Barcelona have won 13 trophies in just 3 years, including:

3 La ligas

2 Champions leagues

1 Copa Del Ray

3 Spanish Super Cups

2 UEFA Super Cups

2 Club World Cups
