Best Walleye Fishing

Updated on October 11, 2011

Anywhere Is The Best Walleye Fishing

To me if there are walleye then it will be the best walleye fishing around.  I realize there are people that have their favorite spots and thats the only places they will go.  Of course they will never tell you where the spot is but if you ask them they will tell you it is the best walleye fishing around.

Thats why I say anywhere is the best walleye fishing.  If there is walleye I will catch them.  Maybe I wont catch them everytime but if they are there I will catch them.  Today one place might be better than another.  However the next day a different place will be better then the last.  If this sounds all too confusing then let me put it in very simple terms.  Anyplace that has walleye has the best walleye fishing..

Best Walleye Fishing Is Great If You Know What A Walleye Is

The best walleye fishing will result in fish 30 inches long weighing about 15 pounds. Of course all days won’t bring nice fish like this. Also the growth rate of a walleye has a lot to do with where it is. It seems walleyes of the south grow faster than walleye of the north. In almost all cases females of the species will grow faster than the males. In the best case scenarios walleye can live to be over 25 years old. However because they are such a prized fish in North America the walleye seldom lives past 6 years. The big ones are the exceptions.

In the last 20 years walleye have become so popular thus forcing some pretty strict rules on keeping the fish. In many places the rules have become very strict, like quotas, size limits, and even in many places now you need to buy tags.

Next time you are lucky enough to catch a walleye take a good look at it. Especially take a look at the eyes. You will quickly see the features that give it the name walleye. The eyes on a walleye are absolutely set to catch its prey in little or no light. In fact the brighter it is the harder it is for them to feed. As a fisherman I do on occasion fish for walleye during the day knowing my results would be limited. I do however know the best walleye fishing happens at night.

Best Walleye Fishing-Features And Habitats

A walleye has a large number of teeth on the roof of its mouth and on the jaws.  The first dorsal fin holds with it dark patches and the lower corner of the tail fin is white.  For the most part the sides have a yellow-green color to them and they too can carry dark patches.  The name walleye is derived from the color of its eyes which comes into play because of a light gathering structure.

The walleye lives in open water such as lakes and reservoirs.  Along with that some of the best walleye fishing is also found in streams and rivers.  The live together in small schools and are most active at night.  Their diet consists of bugs and small fish.  Most times when the sun comes up the walleye head back to deep water.

Best Walleye Fishing-My Quick Thoughts

Out of all my hubsyou will notice walleye will dominate.  Walleye has been my favorite fish for almost 30 years now.  As time went on and the walleye numbers slowly dwindled so did the techniques.  Not to mention the equipment as well.

I will be submitting many, many hubs to tell you about my best walleye tecniques and some of my best walleye stories.

I will also be talking about other fish as well but not likely to the extent of the great walleye.

There is nothing better than feeling that bottom tap on a fishing rod. I don't care how busy I am, I always make time for fishing.

Don't ever give up what you love doing.

Thanks for the comment and look for a lot more hubs on walleye and fishing in general.

I love fishing for Walley and Northern Pike. I grew up in an area north of Chicago close to the Chain O'Lakes, in Lake county. As a kid I would go before school and it was my first destination after school. My first Walleye was when I was 7 and it was a monster (for a 7 yr old...lol) I was hooked on the big fish and wouldn't waste my time on the rainbow trout or the bass.

I haven't been fishing on the lakes in a couple years and sure miss it. Thanks for the hub Dale.
