What is your all-time NBA starting lineup?
Karl Malone has his warped perception of the best starting lineup in NBA history. What is yours?
Karl Malone is a moron, and if it wasn't for John Stockton making him look good, he wouldn't even be a house hold name. When you say "best starting line up", I interpret that as best all around players, both offensive and defensive. With that being said, my starting five would be PG - Magic Johnson, SG - Michael Jordan, SF - Scottie Pippen, PF - Lebron James/Charles Barkley (tie, couldn't decide) and C- Hakeem Olajuwon.
Big, athletic and intelligent lineup. Very well balanced too. Let me push it further. What lineup would you put against them?
....Lets go with C - Bill Russell, PF _ Tim Duncan, SF- Larry Bird, SG - Kobe Bryant, PG - Jason Kidd
I love the Hakeem choice for a lot of teams. This team would be moving, and Hakeem at the post works well.
Two Celtics in the front court with dead eye determination and team oriented skills. Duncan with them and Bryant getting fed from Kidd. Nice.
Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Dennis Rodman, Clyde Drexler, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Out of curiosity, why Drexler over Jordan?
Good question, and Rodman?? You have one of the most prolific rebounders, but at the offensive end of the court, its 5 on 4
There wouldn't be enough ball to go around with any such team and Michael Jordan. Jordan, a big man, and 3 also-rans yes. I picked this team to win. Drexler could spot up and shoot with the best, drive the lane, and could pass. Does it win?
Dont think anyone can definitively say whether any of these teams would win. The Lakers were a supposed Super team & couldn't win for the 2nd time (failed with Shaq, Kobe, G Payton & Karl Malone), but it does look dam good on paper
Good point, Alpha. But I was looking for the rebounder. Plenty of offense already.
You need the proper mix of everything. Rodman was a great team player, preferring to pass, rebound and defend over shooting. Drexler would've fit perfectly with Magic Johnson on the fast break and then you have Kareem in the paint and Bird outside.
It's true what you say about 5 on 4. But (almost) anyone can set a pick. And that's sometimes the most effective offense, isn't it?
PG - Magic Johnson
SG - Michael Jordan
SF - Larry Bird
PF - Tim Duncan
C - Wilt Chamberlain
People always forget about Wilt. Such an amazing specimen. People say if he had anything close to the intensity of Bill Russell he would've been truly unstoppable.
I dont give Wilt as much credit because there really wasn't very many centers to compete with in his prime, and the centers that could (Russell, Lew Alcindor) dominated against him
I'd have Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan as my guards. Lebron James and Tim Duncan as my forwards. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar would be the center.
Outstanding choices. So much offensive firepower.
I almost put Isiah Thomas at the point, but Johnson was 6'9 and could play all five positions if needed.
I agree EJ, breat line up, but I preferred Olajuwon over Jabber because of defensive ability. Defense wins Championships.
True, but Olajuwon has two rings, Jabar has eight.
I have to say, I just can't see the Magic/MJ idea working. No question they were great players in the backcourt, but completely style against style. Michael was, of course great with the ball, but so was Magic. Who plays without the ball here?
You forget Magic was primarily a point guard. He loved to set up his teammates as he did for Kareem for years. He could do that for Jordan easily.
Karl was fair in not including himself, but I'll put him on my team as the prototypical power forward. I like Julius Erving at the other forward. Hakeem Olajuwon in the pivot. And Michael Jordan and Steve Nash in the backcourt. I realize I don't have any pre-1980s players, so for my classic starting five let me take Elgin Baylor and Bob Pettit at the forwards, Wilt Chamberlain in the pivot, and Earl Monroe and Jerry West in the back court.
Nash is actually a great choice given his speed, quickness and uncanny knack for running the fast break. People always forget Dr. J for whatever reason. Amazing player.
As fine a player as Gail Goodrich, and Walt Frazier were, how fine would it have been to have West (in his prime) and Monroe together? Or for that matter, Frazier and Goodrich? We'll never know.
Great Question, EJ. Great answers, everyone.
PG - Magic Johnson
SG - Michael Jordan
SF - Lebron James (Larry Bird honorable mentions)
PF - Bill Russell
C - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Wilt honorable mentions)
Interesting moving Bill to the forward spot. You have his defense and Kareem's offense on the floor at the same time.

According to Scottie Pippen when ask to compare LeBron and Michael together, he said that Michael was a much better scorer. However, he says that LeBron is clearly a much better player over all. What do you think? You think Scottie is valid in this? Or do you think he's full...

Will Lebron James ever pass Michael Jordan as the greatest of all time?
by Alem Belton 12 years ago
With the previous and recent speculation that Lebron James is overrated I figured, Let me ask THE question. "King James" as some call him was coined as the "next Jordan" even before entering the league, but after several failed attempts to win an NBA championship as the...
