Why do people hunt bears?
I can understand hunting for food to live. Hunting for sport is different. Where does bear hunting come into this?
I guess for the same reason they hunt lions, tigers, and elephants. It evidently strokes their ego to kill something that could easily kill them. Too bad the animals they hunt and kill for sport are not carrying guns too. If the animals were shooting back there would be far fewer sport hunters.
There is a huge difference between hunting for food and hunting for sport.
Although I do not hunt bear. It is important to understand that some hunters eat bear. The rump is tender and tastes similar to fillet mignon. Other parts apparently are quite tasty also. There is a significant "black" market for a some bear organs (i.e. liver); therefore, that is another reason (I understand it is not a just reason) that bear is indeed hunted.
Understand that hunting is an important tool of game management, and if the bear population develops past a point of balance that they can impact prey species to the extent that the bear population cannot self-sustain. In other words, they eat themselves out of house and home. At that point, the area is populated by desperately hungry bears. The bear population, starting with cub mortality, suffers. Wildlife management makes an assessment on what the sustainable bear population may be and issues permits accordingly. These are not haphazard or random decisions.
Well, I know a lot of people hunt just for the sport. They will kill birds, squirrel, and other animals just to kill and leave 'em there to rot. A couple of years ago I ran across a pile of about 10 deer just left to rot that were killed for the antlers. This stuff really ticks me off. I was taught that you only kill for 2 reasons, food and self defense. I hold to that principle. I hunt bear for the meat and fur. There's not a lot that goes to waste on any game I kill. Even when I go coyote hunting, I make jerky out of 'em. Coyote makes great jerky. Today I went deer hunting and tomorrow I'm going squirrel hunting. Glad hunting season is finally here. My supply of game meat is getting low.
