I use a very wide toothed comb and delicately try to extract and loosen hair out of the tangle doing the least amount of damage. Preventative measures are better... use a good conditioner; then the hair rarely tangles in the first place!
Oh yes...I have tangled my hair into a round brush, while drying hair...Ouch...that is quite the predicament to untangle..more hair left in the brush than in your hair...lol
One solution is to, if your hair is badly knotted/tangled, get into the shower and wet your hair down, then run conditioner over it. This will help smooth your hair, and while the conditioner is in, you can undo the tangles without hurting yourself or losing much hair in the process.
If it gets knotted or tangled I would have a shower to wash my hair and make sure that I used conditioner. My daughters hair gets tangled every morning and its a battle to allow me to brush it, but its now a pain free experience as I use a detangling spray which really does work.
