Archos 605 WIFI and Internet Media Tablet
The Archos 605 WiFi is the fifth generation model from the well-known French company, Archos. The brilliant touch screen portable media player and PVR is available in 160GB and 30GB hard disk and in 4GB flash editions. It operates on a personalised version of Linux and also ropes in the Opera Web Browser, though optional, for a full Web log on.

It has extreme sound quality and a custom-made equalizer to modify the playback of your favourite music tracks. It also features Playlists and ID3 tags but with the drawback of no FM Radio attached to it.
The video playback on the 4.3” wide screen is razor-sharp and is supported by the MPEG4 format. WMV and MPEG4 backup DVD resolution including MP3, protected and unprotected WMA and WAV. If you add optional formats such as the H.264 and MPEG2 plug-ins, the video playback will get all the more sharper. The menus are consumer friendly and self-explanatory making it easy to choose your options. It also allows you to gain access to the root directories.
And if you install the optional Web Browser, you will find the world at your fingertips. You gain full access to the web and send emails, watch the YouTube or whatever else you wish to do on the Internet. A virtual keyboard makes it convenient to type your messages and an Adobe PDF Reader manages the files for you.
The Archos Media Portal can be accessed through the main menu and it offers plug-ins and online streaming video from various content providers such as the BBC iPlayer. So, if you are in the UK and want to catch up on your favourite programmes from last week, you know what to rely on. As it comes equipped with WiFi and supports Windows DRM, the Archos 605 will help you stream as well as download your favourite programmes from the BBC iPlayer website and store it for future viewing.
Windows is accessed as an external drive over the USB, enabling the drag-and-drop execution of files. Folders are managed by high-resolution JPEG, BMP and PNG. An optional docking station allows you to exhibit your video content on your TV or to be used as a DVR TV recorder.
The battery life lasts you a whole 5.5 hours of video playback and 17 hours of music playback. It has a foldable stand at the back to enable hands-free viewing. The Archos 605 WiFi is available in the UK at the cost price of £260.95 for the 160 GB model, £200 for the 30GB model and £150 for the 4GB flash model digital media player. It comes in a solid silver body though very light in weight. The only set back to this marvellously useful media player is that many of the contraptions are optional which means you have to pay more if you want more. Each of the extras cost an additional £13.50 but apart from that it is an exceptional gadget that gives you perfect picture and sound quality.
