How can you safely clean/clear memory on your computer?

My computer has been warning me that it's running low on memory and prompts me to close things down. I click cancel and convince myself that, at some point before too much more time goes by, I need to figure out how to clean some memory. Well, I procrastinated long enough and my computer shut down on me today. Everything is okay, but I realize I have to address this before my computer fries. I'm afraid of deleting or moving things that I don't want to get rid of and I don't understand cookies and caches.

    mr-veg,

I'll start by reading your hub and clear the temp cache (yes I have windows 7). I'm no sure about my c drive, d driver or RAM, but will take a screen shot next time it appears. At least I have some steps to start with. Thanks!

Yes it is a possibility, but I'm afraid of not knowing what to get rid of. I don't even know what programs I use on a regular basis. Seems everytime I start deleting things my computer ends up with broken channels, links, programs, etc. ?
