Extending the life of your GoPro Battery

Updated on April 19, 2013

Tips, tricks and accessories to extend your GoPro 2 Battery life

The main issue, really the only issue I have found with the GoPro HD Hero Camera is that the supplied battery life is pretty poor, which has often left me with plenty of wasted opportunity to get great footage.

That said I am a big fan of the GoPro Hero Camera as you'll see from my other pages, I use it mainly for cycling but also for filming just about anything that requires me to be hands-free.

The whole nature of point of view sports cameras is that they are perfect for use in environments that are not naturally near to a power source. So how can you maximise the life from the GoPro Battery Pac and ensure that you don't run out of power just when you were about to shoot that incredible shot?

It's not always convenient to change the battery either, as this will mean opening the case....

So, whether you want to improve your GoPro 2 or GoPro 3 battery life read on!

GoPro Battery Life - Tip 1

Turn off the recording indicator LED

Wasabi Power Battery and Charger Kit for GoPro and GoPro HD HERO, HERO2 Camera - (if you have a GoPro HD Hero 3 scoll down a bit further...)

I can't rate this GoPro Accessory highly enough, it simply more than doubles the run time of your camera, due to the higher capacity the individual batteries will run for around 30% longer than the standard GoPro Battery, and you get a charger that will allow you to charge one battery while shooting with the other, what's not to like?

As paiking says in their 5 Star Amazon review "These batteries are exactly what I was looking for. They are 1400mAh (standard GoPro is 1100mAh), charge quickly, and are half the price (not even counting the price of the charger). The included charger makes life a lot easier as it comes with a car and European adapter to make charging while on the road possible. While at home, the charger plugs into any outlet allowing you to charge batteries without taking your GoPro out of its protecive housing and risk scratching that nonreplaceable lens."

GoPro Battery Life - Tip 2

Use the right frame rate for the shot, i.e. don’t use 48fps or 60fps when 30fps will do

26 out of 29 reviews are for 5 stars, which pretty much speaks for itself, exactly the same product as the original Wasabi Batteries and Charger that is reviewed above, get this if you need more run time!

GoPro Battery Life - Tip 3

Use the One Button Mode - if enabled the camera will start to record when turned on, and stop when turned off

GoPro Camera AHDSH-001 Skeleton Housing for HD Hero Camera

While not an accessory to increase battery life as such, this alternative housing for your GoPro camera allows you to plug in an external power source while keeping the camera relatively protected and compatible with all the mounting options available. It also allows the camera to be connected to a live feed and improves ventilation and sound recording quality.

The skeleton allows easy charging of the camera, improved cooling, and as it is not sealed the sound quality from the built-in mic is improved.

GoPro Battery Bacpac

The GoPro Battery Bacpac is a versatile accessory that allows an almost doubling of the record time, it can also be used to charge spare batteries and comes with a replacement back door to maintain your GoPro's waterproofing with the accessory plugged into the camera's accessory port.

Using this accessory you can just about fill a 32gb card recording 1080p without need to change, recharge or plug the camera in to an external power source.
