There are so many different social networks, each one with their own strengths, including Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, HubPages, ...
I never used facebook, although my wife and kids do, so I am fairly familiar with its strengths and weaknesses. I had a MySpace account, but only so I could monitor what the kids were doing there at that time. Now that they are both adults (and basically abandoned MySpace in the process), I don't use that account anymore.
I had a lot of fun with StumbleUpon, trying to learn to use it to promote my writing, with a modicum of success.
Now I am doing a lot with Google Plus. It seems to offer the best features of StumbleUpon (discover and share cool web content), facebook (share family updates, pics with friends, keep up with contacts), and news aggregators (you can follow 'streams' of information, pictures, and video related to trending topics).
I am building my circles there, interacting with others, and posting some things, but not really promoting my hubs there. I have promoted a few other writers' hubs that I thought were particularly good, and I've given one or two of mine a +1. In time I might promote a few of my hubs or other on-line articles, but will keep it low key so nobody thinks I'm just there for self-promotion.
If you're interested in joining me there, my G+ profile is here:

I use Facebook to keep in touch with people I know in real life and a small group of people with whom I have been in contact via the Web for years.
People asked me to join LinkedIn, so I did, but I never use it.
I started a GooglePlus account because I understood it was necessary to link it to whatever I write. Apart from that, I find it totally useless.
I used to have a real Twitter account, but could not keep up with all the messages. I now have one purely for tweeting my articles and web sites. This account does not link to any people I know in the real world.
I do not wish to use HubPages as a social site under any circumstances.
I use Facebook because it is quite user-friendly then people I know are there, too, though not much conversation is going on in there.
Mostly, I am using it because I play Farmville!
