I think what you are looking for is the use of DIV tags and CSS instead of using a TABLE tag.
in old school web layout you would use Info as a general example. but now you would put everything in a div tag
in in a CSS file or in a STYLE tag on your page you might have
To design web pages without HTML tables use the new features of HTML 5. There plenty of documentation on HTML 5.
1) Tables use more code causing code bloat and slower downloads for the user.
2) It is much better to separate content from design using CSS.
3) Using CSS allows you to change how the whole web site looks by simply editing one CSS file. You can't do this with tables.
Another reason is that search engines find table less designed web pages easier to crawl.
