   No, when N. Korea, Iran, or ?? sets off an EMP blast over the central U.S., or when surges caused by solar flares wipe out the power grid transformers, we are S.O.L.
   
   The infrastructure will go down, and it will take at least several years, if ever, to rebuild.
   
   In the meantime, those of us in cities are going to experience a drastic depopulation, among other things.

   Obviously not, Daniel. That is a lamentable event and at the same time, a wonderful thing. This dependence entirely upon the great god electricity. Yet, I really can't imagine a world without it-though such a society could exist, but with much difficulty. And besides, there are better things in life: that is, there are better queries to query. At least, this is my opinion. Perhaps I am too bias-but then, most of America-at least with regard to this particular question (excluding, naturally, the Amish and Luddities)-is bias, too.

   Funny you asked I was just thinking about this today. Wish we had another way of of power. I mean theirs solar power, but I am talking about a method that could be as good as electricity

   hell no, life would then be so boring, no internet, no tv, i bet the world would be a lot more healthy, as we have all become use to sitting infront of the television at the end of the day doing nothing more than eating crisp and fast food

   Yes...I've done it before, and could do it again . However, I'm also a farm girl from Wyoming...I spent the first half of my life almost entirely without grocery stores and with no plumbing during the winter. Granted, it would require a career change -- it's really hard to be a freelance writer online if there's no electricity -- but I have enough skills related to the basic requirements for life (which would no doubt come in pretty handy when we're toting chunks of ice packed in sawdust down from the mountains to try to keep meat from spoiling quite so fast) that I could easily find profitable work elsewhere.

   Yes I could adapt to a world without electricity. I've lived off the  grid for over 20 years and over half those years I spent living with one 12 volt light and candle light. The rhythm of life changes, it gets slower, and there is more time for reflection and wonder. Reading by candle light is soporific.
   
   Could I adapt to a world without petrol? That would be very difficult.

   No.  If all electricity (except perhaps lightning) disappeared from the world 99.9%+ of all people die.  Civilization dies.  Very nearly 100% of all machines die - even steam machines use electricity in the controls. 
   
   The only metals available (and our world depends on metals and oil) will be already in use,  - all the easy ore is already mined and without heavy machinery we can't reach the hard to get stuff.  No more oil (drill rigs require electricity, as do pumps, for controls if nothing else) so much of our chemical knowledge is now useless.  Even re-use of things like steel will be impossible without the large use of energy we won't have.
   
   Wychic makes good points, but how will she gather food without guns and/or plows?  Both will wear out and are irreplaceable.  No more arrowheads for arrows, no more steel knives.  Wildiris indicates he has used 12V lighting, but that is electricity and gone.  Batteries no longer work.  Nearly everything with moving parts, everything providing light, heat or cooling dies.  People just don't realize that electricity is used in everything we have.

    Yes - we do while traveling , do hand washing cook on the open fire , play rumi cub & other Adult pasttimes !
    Have a solar panel on the caravan !

    I don't know. I think I will though but, I will see if the time comes! In heaven there probably won't be electricity, that just my opinion though. You will never know for sure till the time comes!
