Always try to picture how you are going to use the boat first.

Row, Motor, sail or a combination. Who's going to use it and how many. Where it will be used, inland lakes or out in the open water.
Where will the boat be kept during the boating season on a mooring or a trailer or at a dock. How about storage, in the garage or at a marina.
Then you can look at appropriate plans and find a design you like. Try to match your skill level to a plan.

Then start thinking about how you want the boat finished. This will determine some of the building steps. If it's to be left all bright or wood finish you need to take extra precautions to wind up with a nice finish. If youir painting then you can be a little more messy.
You must learn first buoyancy to avoid your boat prone to sink, and then create a great design to avoid your boat easy to sunk.
Make sure the center of gravity is always below the center of buoyancy.
