    Read the instruction book and follow the manufactures notes to the letter.   Failure to do so starts the battery's life off on the wrong foot and it will never perform to its maximum capacity.

    Usually you want to let it charge fully before using it.  Modern batteries are pretty forgiving but to prolong the life let it discharge fully once in a while.  If you leave it on a charger for long periods of time it can cause the battery to wear out early.

    these new 6 cell batteries, the ones that have 6-10 hour battery lives suggest using the battery completely before charging it even once.
