How to become an excellent computer programmer?

I have a diploma in Information Technology. I think I have the quality that someone should have to shine as a programmer. I am from science background. My secondary and post secondary education is in science that includes mathematics, physics and chemistry. Then I have graduation in urban planning. Then I did a diploma in IT. I want to be a world class computer programmer. But I do not know path I should follow. Please provide me some suggestion.

study computer science. study math (to develop logic), specialize (become an expert) in one area. Learn to code by studying the masters, the same way as writers study the masters to become better writers.

I will answer this question for you as I am a web programmer and have been for 25 years.

I think the opportunity to become a programmer is out there for you and anyone else who is interested. You can simply become a web programmer in languages like PHP, MySQL, jQuery, .NET and learn the code for free from thousands of websites. Try w3schools.com to get started.

To get good as a programmer, you don't need schooling as schooling and computer science education does not prepare you for real-world computer programming applications. Instead, start developing new programs and web applications that apply to your life and business needs. Soon, you will become a programmer faster than had expected. Don't get me wrong. I am not saying that you should not go to school for programming. I am saying that you will learn faster by writing programs that solve your own personal needs, not the needs of the author of a computer science book.

I have learned 18 computer languages with the advice I added above.

I have a couple of hubs on this as well. Learn as much as you can on your own as fast as you can and remember, Rome was not built in a day. Learn computer languages at a pace that will help you comprehend it and develop as many programs as you can. Your experience as a programmer will fly to you very quickly.

Master a language of your choice, study software engineering paradigm in detail. Be creative and start practicing with simple prototype applications. Have dedication and confidence and you'll be on the path to your goal.
