Why did most of the discoveries of modern day happen after the middle of the 19th Century?
I have a feeling that most of the discoveries and inventions were only publicized after the middle o the 19th Century by scientists and thinkers who got hold of knowledge which already existed in ancient writings. Witches and Wizards were in fact scientists who used to have lot of scientific knowledge but used to either keep is secret or they used to share it with the Royalty.
'Magic is just science we don't understand yet' - thats actually something good to come out of 'Thor', and it pretty much goes hand in hand with your last point.
And its more like the science was going on for a long time, such as studies on space and gravity, and forces, etc, but in the 19th Century, they started to get practical uses - and that's what people remember.
