I prefer a laptop. A few years ago one would have to pay top dollar for a laptop that could keep up with a desktop, but these days you can get a great laptop for only a little more than a similar desktop. Plus, the portability of a laptop seals the deal for me. I have done a fair amount of air traveling and a desktop would never do. I do plan, in the future, to get a desktop because you can get high performance at minimal cost.
I'd have to say a laptop, nowadays laptops are powerful enough to run most major programs and the portability is great.
I am in the older crowd and rather have a desktop.
I do not want a computer with me 24 hours a day.
I can upgrade a desktop easier and get more years out of it.
I like a regular keyboard.
I can add additional USB ports, Iee5 ports and disk drives to a desktop.
There is less propriety soffware on a desktop than a lap top, thus if I ever have to rebuild from the ground up, it is going to be easier.
I also have a laptop, mainly as a backup, but when I use it at home, I hook up a full size monitor and keyboard and regular mouse to it.
