I'm not sure of the specifics of when but I started hearing about it a lot, 3 months ago.
It is an amazing tool for internet marketers. The platforms allow people to share information in seconds that can lead to huge peak in web visitors within minutes. It is an easy platform for people to use, and it is set up to be familiar by being so similar to the "cork board" pinning of cut outs and notes.
It's much more visual than other social media networks - so it fills a different niche. For things like crafting, or design, there's a wealth of inspiration to be had.
It's great for promoting products (such as housewares or other visually appealing items), and with the recent rise in popularly of infographics it's a fantastic way to share these with like minded people.
It's definitely a nice change of pace from the other major social networks!
