Personal experience, Hp and acer are not that good they break down over time. Dell, Apple, and Compaq are the most durable and good keeping their prices...even steve jobs competed with Dell and Compaq see videos on youtube where he even said those two are his only real competency.
i would say dell it better because im using it right now and this has been my laptop for about 4 years now.
It's a hard question to answer since the same people make most of the internal parts. As of late HP is having a lot of problems with the lower quality parts they are using in their laptops. Dell seems to be on the upswing in quality in the past couple of years. I currently own an Acer and have had no problems out of it. As far as Compaq is concerned, they are owned by HP and may fall under the same poor quality standards. I'm personally leaning towards Lenovo for the Windows 8 laptops with Toshiba as a close second.

What's the best antivirus for Acer laptops?I downloaded Avast, and the Acer notification said that it has it's own antivirus, which are all kind of wack.

11 days...2 new keyboards, new hard drive (2nd in a year), LCD replaced last year, Vista crashed and new hard drive came with Vista and using new Vista until full install of Win 7 arrives.....tonight...part of keyboard stops working again!!!!!Spent last 3 hours on phone with Dell (India again)...
