Is is ok for young children to use a tablet during church service?

This past Easter, I was shocked by the large number of toddlers and children playing on tablets and cellphones during church service.  I am torn because it keeps them quiet, but shouldn't their parents insist they participate and pay attention?

In my own opinion I don't think it right to give your child a tablet or cellphone to play with during church service because it beats the purpose of you taking him/her to church. At the very least the child should be taught to respect the altar for the brief moment at the church

Oh that's funny! And horrible. Children used to be quiet or got hit. Now they are just playing around instead of paying attention. I used to scribble on papers with a few games on them to keep myself busy, ran out and had to listen. After 10 years old, I would take notes just like my dad. But on electronics? That's disrespectful to the church.

Well I say its ok before church begins but when the priest starts talking tell the child to shut it off.

It's doubtful they're going to pay attention in church, as the outside world is much more interesting than the backside of a pew.  The tablet could be useful to just keep them quiet and still, and they could pull up their online bible or wikipedia to fact-check the sermon if need be.

I think younger children need to have something to do, paper, coloring books etc.  Once they get older, they need to pat attention and participate.  I think electronics are not appropriate in church.
