Websites and Internet Addiction

Updated on February 7, 2015

Having My Own Websites

My first website I had created from an eBook template. I found that there was so much work to do on this template, adding my own accounts, IDs PayPal, keywords and tying it all into me and not someone else. There were many errors with it and searching for some online HTML tutorials helped move forward. This template was the foundation to teach myself about HTML and CSS.

Since this start in 2008, I have created many websites for myself. Many sites offer free or paid website templates. Hosting sites offer a number of templates for you to customize. However, for all these templates, imagine how many people online are using the same template. If you do not customize it, what will make it stand out from the rest?

There is so much to learn about web design. I do not consider myself an expert, though I have come a long way. Some of my sites no longer exist. Below are the ones that are online now.

Intro photo is the paperback all in one book on web design anyone can understand. Order it on Amazon.

Creating a Domain Name

Domain Vs SubDomain Name

Your Website or Shared Site

There are sites that claim to give you a free domain name and site. Many of these are really subdomains. A subdomain will have the name of the shared site first and then your site name. It is a domain inside a domain. For instance take this website (which is not mine) sandymertens.hubpages.com/. The sandymertens is seen by the search engines first and not HubPages. If this were your website, think it through before going this route. For this site it was a smart move on their part.

Social networks such as HubPages offer free membership to have your subdomain or in your profile.

Buying a domain name is easy and inexpensive. I have bought all but one of my domains, except one on Godaddy. When I have talked to customer service, I am always pleased with the service. On Godaddy you are allowed to have 99 subdomains with each domain. These you have full control because you are the administrator of the domain.

Godaddy offers a variety of hosting plans. From Economy 4GH to the Ultimate 4GH plans that start at only a few dollars a month.

Check out the Great Webhosting plans here!

When choosing a domain name, choose it wisely. Some of the ones I have picked out, I really don’t know what I was thinking. If you need a little help coming up with a new just for your site, then Domain Names for Dummies is the book for you.

How does internet addiction tie in here?

Creating websites and adding onto websites is addictive. Personally, I have spent more than 40 hours during the week working on one website.

During the week how much time do you spend on a website? Does not have to be your's. It could be HubPage

Sandyspider Gifts on Zazzle Website - My Gift Site That Has Zazzle Products

Website of my Zazzle Products

Many people have their own website of the designs that they have on the official Zazzle site. This is a subdomain site that I have created with some of my Zazzle products. It is not one that I have promoted. So it is not easily found. As a website owner you need to promote to let others know about your site.

Gift sites will have their name first in the URL

These are some gifts shown above that are on the actual Zazzle website. Zazzle is in the front page of the link. Your shops there are not under the subdomain page with being first. This way, Zazzle is the first part that Google will see within the search engines. Online gift shops want their name stand out first. Which makes sense.

See my shops on Zazzle for the most updated products. Presently there are 10 shops

Gift Website

After I had let my gift website expire from GoDaddy, it was one that had not been grandfathered in as a free site like my others had. I did not want to spend the money I was spending on web hosting.

So I decided to buy my domain from Blogger and change my Sandyspider Gifts Blog to Giftsyoutreasure.com

The reason that I had went with Blogger is that I am familiar with it and find WordPress hard to learn on. Those that have started out with WordPress will say it is easy. But I do believe it is what you start out on as far as blogs go. Since it is a paid domain with free hosting, the only thing I do not like about it is the Blogger search at the top of the page. I have not noticed this on those who have their own paid WordPress domains.

Where is Sandyspider?

Directory Site for Sandyspider

Find Where This Spider Crawls To

Sandyspider.com is a partial directory site of the websites, social networks, blogs and gift sites that I am on. Far from being complete, this site was quickly put together. It is still and may be for a long time a work of art in making it complete.

Subdomains on HubPages

Sandyspider is a name that I have used on many social network media sites. It is the first name that I had created my Zazzle shop from.

Sandyspider is the name that I have for my oldest HubPages account. It is the name that I have had on my oldest Squidoo account. Since the transfer of Squidoo account to HubPages, I had to create a new account, which the Sandyspider account on Squidoo is now SandyMertens on HubPages. I do have another account here on that was transferred over called ReviewsfromSandy making three accounts on this site, which I would prefer to be as one.

My first website I made with Notepad. Then I moved into Dreamweaver and now I go for CMS. I still miss the old Notepad though

SusannaDuffy I had to look up CMS. LOL I have gotten so use to making it from scratch that I found it harder when using software.

I created my first website in 1994, and still have it - and many more! I find it much easier to create them from scratch using html and css. However, I'm sure that people who are new to website creation will find templates much easier. I used to spend many hours a week updating my sites, but after 20 years, I'm a bit burned out!

You have provided much useful information in your article. Thanks for sharing!

FantasticVoyages So you have been at this longer. I recently bought WebPlus and it is easy to use. Just like I have mentioned it.

But I still find it easier to make it all from scratch. Guess it is hard to change.
