Atlanta Renaissance Festival: Kings, Queens, Knights, Maidens And Mead...

Updated on March 26, 2011

The Atlanta Renaissance Festival...

One thing that is certain, people love to visit festivals and fairs, and it might mainly be the fact that they feel the need to escape for a little while from their everyday worries and problems and just relax and have fun doing something different… There are many different kinds of festivals and fairs around the country, but in the City of Atlanta Georgia area, one comes to mind… The Atlanta Renaissance Festival happens every year for up to 2 months in the spring, usually starting up in April or so.

This is the largest event of its type in the southeast region, and it has a permanent home located near Peachtree City in Southwest Atlanta. All the buildings and decorations are already set up and ready for the next year’s event, which makes it a great experience for all coming here! There appear to be several stops on the calendar around the country for the performers, and this is their time of year to make Atlanta shine with the singsong of the Medieval times , including the King and Queen of the castle, and many knights jousting for glory and honor on horseback. In addition, you will see other guests and merchants walking around in the costume of the day back then, with every variation you can think of!

Washing Well Wenches at the Atlanta Renaissance Festival...

If you would like to get a nice costume for yourself at the Atlanta Renaissance Festival, there are plenty of merchants there that can assist with an outfit that fits your style, whether it’s a lowly serving wench, or a swordfighter decked out to the hilt! There will be swords, knives, axes, and other fighting implements for sale, and also dresses and tights designed to be right at home in that time period. It’s really a fun time for all, especially if you get into the atmosphere and tradition of it.

There are several fantastic shows also at the Atlanta Renaissance Festival, including the Washing Well Wenches, sword swallowers, Parrots of the Caribbean, and other outdoor theatre shows. All are incredibly, and probably the hardest thing you’ll have to do is keep track of all the times for the shows so that you don’t miss any! I know I didn’t want to miss even one, because they all looked so good…

Washing Well Wenches...

Turkey Legs and Blackberry Cobbler at the Atlanta Renaissance Festival!

You can try your hand at axe throwing, or shoot a bow and arrows at a target. These are the types of entertainment that you would typically be doing during a tournament or festival back in the middle ages of Europe… It’s always good to test your skill to see how you would have stacked up against them! Of course, you have to at least stop by the village idiot as he hurls insults at passersby to get them to try and throw a ball and knock him into the water! Always a fun time!

One of my all time favorite things to do at the Atlanta Renaissance Festival is eat! The food here is 2nd to none, especially if you like carnival food with an authentic flair of the medieval days… You can find most anything here that you are craving, including some incredible warm Blackberry Cobbler with ice cream for dessert, so make sure to save room! What festival would be the same without the traditional steaming Turkey Legs all pink and delicious inside…? Or maybe that waffle cake you’ve been wanting?

Try Some Mead, or Honey Wine at the Atlanta Renaissance Festival...

Thirsty? Then try some of the more exotic drinks that you just don’t get anywhere else, such as Mead or an imported English wine… Mead is one of my favorites, and it’s basically a honey wine that is really sweet. If you’re a fan of sweet wines like I am, you’ll really love to try the Mead! But if wine isn’t your thing, there will be the traditional beer, soft drinks, or water available, so don’t panic!

Going to the Atlanta Renaissance Festival has become such a great tradition with me that I try to go every year at least once, and really since it’s a 2 month long festival ideally I’d go a couple times at least! I can never get enough of this fantastic festival, and I hope I’ve convinced you to give it a try when it comes around next year… Because even if you’ve already missed it for this year, there’s always next year, and that’s the beauty of it! Other great attractions to see while you are in the Atlanta area are Stone Mountain, and Zoo Atlanta. Have fun!
