The Beauty of Oasis in the Middle of Desert

Updated on October 29, 2011

Today is the most beautiful day for me to write this hub. I am gonna take you tour in the special place. This place is far away from modern, technology and pollutions. There’s a question for us, where is the coldest place in the world? I thought the wise answer is at the North Pole or Antartica. Another question, where is the hottest places in the world? The best answer is at the desert. There are many categories on Hubpages, but travel and places is always my favorite. This time I’ll write about traveling in speciality place and at the same time we learn about another part of the earth. We may not give attention to this place. Actually we can see this in beautiful side. I want to take you traveling in the middle of desert. Have you ever heard about oasis? I thought desert is unusual place for traveling. Maybe there’s a question in our mind, why we should visiting desert. What can we found in the middle of the desert? an open wide area of sands with very hot weather. But actually there’s an emphasized in the middle of the desert. If you were alone in the desert, what do you need? You need water, right. Or maybe you need the coolest place under the tree. Actually you need something refreshment. Oasis is the coolest place in the middle of the desert. What is oasis actually? I’ll explain below. So, please continue to read………

A little about Oasis

Oasis (in plural: Oases) is an area in a desert where the water reaches the surface, where the vegetation permited to grow because of enough moisture. The water may come up from the springs, so a permanent supply of fresh water is available. Oases vary in size from about 2.5 acres (1 hectare). This place around small spring to vast of areas of naturally watered. We can see people also live in this place. For example, the two-thirds of the populations of the Sahara live in oases. The date palm is the main source food. Other plants are citrus fruits, figs, peaches, apricots, vegetables, and cereal grains. The people got the water from sandstone aquifers. I heard that artificial oases have been successfully created by using tube wells on Sahara. Actually there is different size of oases, ranging from a pond with a group of date palms. We can see this at the deserts of Arabia. The ice-free dry valleys of Antarctica also called oases. As we know that Antartica as the coolest area in the world. Scientist called these oases because Antartica supporting life and it was surrounded by a barren ice desert. Most of oasis was located in isolated area. Oases also provide habitat for animals and even humans (Wikipedia).

I heard the history of oases was started thousand years ago. The ancient Egyptians were the witnesses of the desert in North Africa. The oases were not only for of green fertile land but also of civilization. Other source said that Oasis as a fertile place in the Libyan Desert. We can find this information in Samuel Purchas's 1613 travel book. He is English speakers were first becoming world travelers. But now we can see an oasis as the peaceful and flourishing place which is contrast with its surrounding (in the desert).

From Wikipedia I collected many oases in the world. In Africa we can see Bahariya, Siwa and Farafra Oasis (Egypt), Gaberoun and Kufra Oasis (Libya), M'Zab Valley, Timimoun and Ouargla (Algeria), Tafilalt (Morocco), Tozeurv(Tunisia), but Nile River valley is claimed as the world's biggest oasis by The Guinness Book of World Records with width about 22,000 square kilometers (Egypt).

In America we can see Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge, Twentynine Palms - California, Warm Springs Natural Area , Las Vegas Valley but it grown into a metropolitan area, La Cienega, New Mexico (All these oases located in United States), Huacachina (Peru), Mulege and San Ignacio, Baja California Sur (Mexico).

In Asia we can see Al-Qatif as the largest oasis on the coast of the Persian Gulf, Al Ahsa, the largest oasis in Asia (both of these oases located in Saudi Arabia), Ein Gedi (Israel), Azraq (Jordan), Liwa (United Arab Emirates), Loulan, Marin, Turpan, Yarkand (China), Tabas (Iran).

In Australia we can see Palm Valley at the Central Australia. Please enjoy the pictures of other oases below.

Umm-al-Maa Oasis (Mother of Water), Lybia

This oases located near Fezzan and 30 km north of Germa, Libya. Many people called this mother of water, because this is the biggest lake in middle of oasis. The levels of salt in Umm-al-Maa oasis was the same as in the Dead Sea. The high salt in the lake Umm Al-Maa make you easy to float when bathing here. Are you interest? you can put this place in your travel list.

Huacachina Oasis, Peru

This oasis located at southwestern Peru, Hucachina itself is a small oasis town in the Ica area. We can find popular resort around this oasis with foreign and domestic tourists. That’s why this place called "Oasis of Americas". There’s a story behind the forming of this oasis, a long time ago there’s a hunter disturbing a princess who was taking a bath. Then the princess was disappeared leaving a pool of water. Now we can see this as lakes in the middle of desert.

Creescent Lake Oasis at Gobi Desert, China

This is kind of lake in the middle of desert. This place located on the edge of an ancient city that can be found on the journey along the Silk Road to the West. Because it is used directly by farmers and because of growing population made this lake began to dry up and down more than 25 feet in 30 years. Personally, this is so great and beautiful. Creescent Lake is a wonder in Gobi Desert.

Timia Oasis at Sahara Desert, Nigeria

Timia oasis located in the Northern Nigeria. Timia is the most beautiful oasis in this country. Not only because of the lake in the middle of desert around the palm trees. There’s beautiful garden with citrus and pomegranates are ready to be picked and eaten, don’t forget we must pay for this. Several kinds of other fruit trees, cereals, and vegetables are also grown here. That’s why this place looks green.

Hi Prasetio! Such beautiful pictures! Wile visiting the beautiful Anza Borrego desert in Southern California, my husband and I came upon a small oasis. What a cool place. As we were leaving shortly before dusk, we met a young man who was going to camp there, alone. Don't think I'd want to do that. All kinds of critters must show up at night for a drink!
