The Best Digital Camera For Travel Photography
Have you ever been out in a new area and surrounded by new and majestic landscape and then thought to yourself “if I only brought my camera”. However, if you missed capturing a great photo opportunity that was happening right before you but missed it because you were trying to get your SLR camera out of its large holder?
I have asked myself those questions many times over, and I took an oath to resolve those frustrations once and for all.
I have used many different kinds of cameras over the years and have acquired several different high end SLR camera, both in digital and film. I use them when I am really determined to get that “perfect shot”. They are great for that purpose if you want the higher quality picture with better control, but they don’t do really well when you don’t have them with you.
My selfishness ended there though. However, later that same year I was on a last minute flight with two other coworkers. They happened to be into the same types of photography that I was and have been on a couple of camera trips. I was in the middle of moving from my current location to another and had already packed up my nice SLR digital and film cameras. So at the last min I went down to the photo shop and purchased a small Casio pocket digital camera.
My coworkers that I was with had a heads up on the upcoming business trip long before myself. They had already arranged to bring their SLR cameras on the trip with them. Of course, being me, I had a bad case of camera envy and the thought of buying another high end camera for a very long series of flights crossed my mind.
This was going to be a fascinating trip to India, and the trip had already been arranged to let us explore some of the natural and historic beauty of India. I personally, was looking forward to going into the Taj Mahal, the Sore palace, and the Aga Palace. Not to mention the long string of natural and historical monuments and nature along the way.
As the plane entered Mumbai airspace in preparation to landing, I thought to myself, that a couple thousand dollars, was not really that much for another camera for my collection. It would be simple, explaining to the wife when I got home the justification for the expense as she flipped through all the amazing photos I was taking.
Then I realized where I was and remembered when buying electronics out of the US there are numerous steep markups. Even the cost associated with a basic SLR camera was going to burn a hole right into my pocket. Then of course there is the crucial conversation with the wife when I get home. (gulp)
So, Plan B was born I would have to rely on my coworkers for the really good pictures while taking numerous shots with the small Casio digital Camera I had purchased before we left the states. I even ended up taking a few shots with the camera phone I was carrying at the time.
After the trip,I was excited to get the prints made from my camera. I wanted to compare them to the great pictures I know that my coworkers with the nice cameras had captured. Then a very curious thing happened and will forever change the way I look at the taking casual photos. As, I went through the pictures that we had taken it was very difficult to see the difference in quality between the small Casio digital camera I was taking and the large SLR cameras my coworkers brought. At one point, I had accidentally mixed up some of the photos. Then I had to use the file names to double check which camera they had come from.
I’m not saying that the lower resolution pictured are as greatly done as the ones taking by my coworkers with the high end SLR cameras. If, we were to manipulate the photos in any way by either making them larger or if we were to crop the pictures to get the fine detail of a small area it would not work. However, the common task of setting up a nice slide show of a recent trip they are perfect. The 2.5 megapixel camera phone shots were even perfect for the majority of most viewing needs. It gives me second thoughts about having to haul around a large SLR camera and its gear if I can get still perfect shots with my small Casio Digital Camera.
It was pretty obvious when the pictures came out. When I was looking through, I noticed I was able to capture the small surprise shots while walking or driving with my. If there were shots my coworkers were still getting out the heavy SLR cameras, and the opportunity had already passed them by. They were striving for fine photography” I was able to get many more shots and get a better sense of where we were doing so.
So, to answer the question which is the best camera for travel photography? In my humble opinion, it is the one that you already have. However, if you don’t have one a small digital camera, you can pick up one for less than 200 at most electronic stores. Sometimes, those tears you have over having your good camera at home are wasted when you digital phone camera will work just fine. Just a few years ago 1 to 2 megapixel cameras were the norm now you can get 10 meg cameras very reasonably.
I’m not one to just toss my entire collection of high end SLR cameras in the trash. I still use them regularly and for planned photography outings. However, now I take a lot more picture with my Casio digital pocket camera because they are so easy to go everywhere. If, you want to try I bet you will be able to relate to my experience here very quickly and find it very similar
