    I heard it had something to do with jazz musicians who used to play New York City a long time ago referred to it as "The Big Apple", as though it was the biggest place that they were going to play.

    Go a little north of the city and you'll see a lot of apple orchards. At one time Apples were the biggest crop in the state! Back when George Washington was around, they didn't drink beer, they drank apple cider! New York was called the Apple State and it's biggest city would obviously be called "The Big Apple"

    ~If you watch the Simpson's they call it "The Windy Apple" cross between Chicago and NYC
