I came across an article by Anna highlighting several intriguing facts about the country, https://wanderwisdom.com/travel-destina … -Portugal. In my own research learning about Portugal in preparation for a trip next year, a couple others that caught my attention were:

        • Lisbon being the second-oldest capital city in Europe, and
        • Portugal was awarded 'Best Tourist Destination in Europe' for 2022 by the World Travel Awards according to this Herald News article https://www.heraldnews.com/story/news/l … 168012001/

I'm curious if anyone else has additional fascinating tidbits they could share from their own discoveries exploring Portugal's rich history and culture. Comparing notes on lesser known facts would add even more depth to the planning process.

Thanks for bringing up Portugal - it really does have such a fascinating history. One interesting fact I learned is that Portuguese is the 6th most spoken language worldwide due to their colonization efforts centuries ago. It always amazes me how countries can spread their culture and language all over the globe like that. I'm planning a trip there next spring and can't wait to experience some of the Portuguese influence firsthand, like sampling their cuisine or listening to fado music.

Woah, that Portuguese language fact is fascinating, @selenahub! Here's another fun fact to add to the Portugal love: Did you know Japanese tempura might actually have Portuguese roots?

Apparently, Portuguese missionaries introduced the concept of frying food with a light batter to Japan way back in the 16th century https://guide.michelin.com/hk/en/articl … n%20Japan. Tempura is such a beloved dish there now! Learning these little historical connections makes travel even more fascinating.

I'm planning a trip to Portugal myself soon and might share some more trivia as I get closer to the date. In the meantime, I found this article that might be helpful for yours https://gowithguide.com/blog/tourism-in … guide-5600
