Pueblo Lake State Park- Colorado
Welcome to the Colorado State Parks, there are 42 parks in the park system and they attract 11 million visitors each year. Colorado's varied terrain allows some of the parks to be in lower elevations and in the plains, while some of the parks are located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Among these parks is Lake Pueblo State Park. As one might guess, Lake Pueblo is near the city of Pueblo, which is locate in the southern portion of Colorado. Lake Pueblo is home to one of Colorado's larger reservoirs and offers many opportunities for both water sports and other activities such as hiking and camping. Lake Pueblo Activities
Due to the size of the reservoir at Lake Pueblo it is obvious that one of the main attractions to this state park are the water activities. Lake Pueblo offers over 4,500 surface acres of water, with a corresponding 60 miles of shoreline. Another 10,000 acres of land surround the lake offering many land based activities.
Due to the warm water at Lake Pueblo, many water contact sports come to mind. If you want to swim, the Rock Canyon Swim Beach is the place to go. This area has sandy beaches for you to relax on. There are also picnic areas and even a shower and locker area to store your valuables while you are in the water.
If you want to get out on the water, water skiing, jet skiing and sailboarding can take advantage of the amount of water and the pleasant temperature. Lake Pueblo is much warmer in the summer than many of the other reservoirs in Colorado. The size of the lake also makes it easy to find your own area to enjoy the water without feeling too crowded.
If you are a boater there are two marinas on the lake offering a location to launch your boat or resupply. Boating is allowed 24 hours a day on the lake and there are plenty of places to explore. You can fish, ski or just enjoy the scenery from out on the water.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife considers Lake Pueblo to be a fishing "hot spot." Whether you are fishing from the shore, or on a boat there are many opportunities catch many different species of fish here. Some of fish in the lake are Trout, Walleye, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Crappie, Channel Catfish, Wiper, Bluegill, and Yellow Perch. There are some specific regulations for what fish can be kept, so make sure you check those out to get up to date information when you arrive.
If you want to explore on foot, Lake Pueblo offers over 34 miles of paved trails for both hiking and biking. There are additional dirt trails that are great for taking horses out on. Thanks to the relatively mild climate around Lake Pueblo, compared to other parts of Colorado, hiking can be pleasant year round.
If you decide to spend the night you can pick out on of the 400 campsites that Lake Pueblo has to offer. These sites offer a mix of tent sites and electrical hook ups. The campgrounds with electricity also offer flush toilets, showers and laundry facilities. You can even find sites close to the marinas, allowing easy access to the water when you want to take your boat out for the night.
