An Interview with Equealla
Simone Smith interviews equealla- a hubber and mother of five from South Africa
1. Having joined four weeks ago, you're relatively new to HubPages- what has it been like to adjust to the community and process of writing and sharing hubs?
To be quite honest, this is the first on-line community I have ever joined. Some of my precious new friends I have met here said I am lucky. Some "places" out there are apparently real "horror homes". There was no need to "adjust" to the community. They absolutely took my hand, pulled me into their lives and hearts, and made me feel at home, since day one. The process of writing does not feel like a "work", but rather a fun-thing to do. You know, like doing scrapbooking, or toying around with paint on a canvass. If it doesn't work out, you just restart with a clean page. The tools are user-friendly, and even a computer idiot like me can use it with ease. Sharing hubs with real people is like having casual conversation with your very best friends at home. Like I said, these people in this community are some of the friendliest and gentle in the world. It is easy to communicate with people like these.
2. What originally inspired you to join HubPages?
My kids, the darlings. They are the ones trying out everything new. They said : "Mom, you have to check this out, you will really "digg" it!" They were right.
3. Your writing can be very poetic at times- even in your how-to guides. How have you developed your writing style?
If I tell you that my children frequently ask me to stop being melodramatic, will that answer your question?
I must admit, though, that I have always loved writing things, since I could hold a pen. Its just the way I normally say things. Sometimes I tend to talk too much, but fortunately, people keep on listening, and do not fall asleep. (Perhaps because I have kind friends.)
4. You have already published 15 hubs since you've joined- and yet you're a mother of five children! How do you find time to write?
I am a very unpractical mom, and the kids know it. My twin boys could fry a perfect egg at the age of five. I just applied the Band-aid, when needed. Most of the time my home is a bee-hive of activity, as each kid have a constant circulation of at least five friends per unit, in the house. But with many hands available, they quickly tidy the place in a few minutes. They are great organisers. I said it a million times before: I must be the luckiest mother on earth!
5. I am intrigued by your profile picture- an eagle. What made you choose that particular image?
That is the meaning of my name: Francis Equealla, as registered in the countries archives. It means: Free as the eagle flies.
6. What is your favorite topic to write about? Do you have a favorite hub that you have published so far?
Any topic can be a favourite for me. I am just not too good about the issues of sport. Give me something to talk about, and I will shoot. Like I said in my bio, I am a very curious person, and all aspects of life intrigue me tremendously.
7. What types of hubs do you like to read best? Are there certain hubbers that you follow?
Because people interest me, I do not search topics, but rather scan randomly. If I see a interesting remark in a comment box, or a fascinating answer at the questions asked, my curiosity will drive me to new people. That is how I have met most of the people I am following. I cannot choose favourites amongst them. Each person has his or her own special meaning for me in my life.
8. Finally, a fun question- you mention in your profile that you live in Pretoria, South Africa- one of the cities where World Cup games were hosted. What was it like living somewhere that suddenly became the focus of great international attention? And did you get to go to a game?
Actually we are quite used to being a focus of international attention, but more for infamous reasons. It is nice to be able to be useful for a change. A lot of negativity had been going around before the big kick-off. I am so proud of my fellow countymen to have proved it all wrong. Except for a few isolated petty negativities, everything is going well, this far. There is a spirit of goodwill everywhere. Like I said, sport is not my forte, and I did not go to any game. But that is not needed, the vuvuzelas and soccer balls are everywhere. I've got one on my phone-pouch. (Only a little one!)
Thanks equealla!
