It is not necessary. After having two cats that were declawed, one that came to me declawed and another that I had declawed using laser technology, I now have a third cat that I have chosen not to declaw because I think it is unnecessary and cruel. Yes, the cat can recover from the pain of surgery, but the procedure actually removes the distal section of the digits in their paws which as you can imagine can cause difficulty with normal function. I provide my current cat with scratching posts and keep her nails trimmed. I think if people do not want to deal with the normal activities and functions of an animal they should not take that animal in as a pet.
