Can You Really Make Money by Publishing Articles on HubPages?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by New Hubbers and people who are considering Joining HubPages.

This Hub Article will discuss the several Affiliate Programs offered on HubPages and how to set them up to make money.

We will discuss the HubPages Earnings Program, eBay and Amazon Affiliate Programs and Google Adsense and how to Effectively Use each program to your benefit.

Please keep in mind that HubPages is not a "Get Rich Quick Scheme!" Making money happens with experience over time. A lot of research and effort must be made before most people start making any money. Save yourself some time and effort by doing your research!

Money Making Check List:

Who are the Monetization Partners on HubPages?

The Monetization Partners on HubPages are the companies that HubPages has made agreements with to allow ads to appear on our site in exchange for revenue.

The way it works is that Hubbers create individual Hub Articles and Ads are placed on the Hubs. When people click on the Ads in our Hub Articles, we get a share of the cost paid by the Advertiser. It may seem complicated at first, but it really isn't!

**Read This Important Message!**

Never Click On Your Own Ads!

Doing so is considered "Ad Fraud" and is a violation of HubPages' Terms of Use and also violates Google and the other Affiliate Program rules. If you click on your own ads you risk being Banned from HubPages and Google AdSense for Life! The same rule applies for clicking on other Hubbers' Hub Ads indiscriminately, or having people outside of HubPages go to your Hubs and click on your ads repetitively. Your IP Address is associated with each ad that you click. Be A Responsible Advertiser!

You Can Make Money On HubPages Through Advertisements!

Let's take a look at HubPages' Advertising Partners:

  • HubPages Earnings Program
  • Amazon Affiliates Program
  • eBay Program
  • Google Adsense

Are You Making Money?

Have You Made Any Money On HubPages?

  • No, I don't participate in the Ad Programs. I am just here because I love to write!
  • No, I am a New Hubber and am not sure about how to sign up for the Affiliate Programs.
  • Yes, I am not yet ready to retire, but I have made a little bit of money on HubPages.
  • Yes, I have made quite a bit so far on HubPages and usually get paid every month!

The HubPages Earnings Program

The HubPages Earnings Program is a combination of several Advertising programs combined into one. This program is fairly new and many Hubbers have experienced great monetary results. Having all these programs in one place is great because it allows for faster earnings and one Single Payout.

  • The Earnings Threshold for the HubPages Earnings Program is $50.00 (USD) meaning that you have to earn at least that amount during a pay period to get paid.
  • Payments are sent on the 28th of each month via PayPal.

It can be a little confusing to understand the HubPages Earnings Program because there are actually 2 Amazon and 2 eBay programs that are currently running. The Amazon Associates Program is the older of the two Amazon Ad Programs and at one time stood alone as it's own entity. It is worthy to note that sometime in the future this program will be added to the HubPages Earnings Program and will no longer stand as a separate program.

eBay is now part of the HubPages Earnings Program as well. This is great for Hubbers because about 3 years ago eBay stopped accepting applications to it's Affiliate Advertising Program. Now Hubbers who are enrolled in the HubPages Earnings Program can benefit from having eBay Ads in their Hub Articles!

Any Hubber that has been successfully accepted into the HubPages Earnings Program can now earn from both eBay and Amazon without signing up for additional affiliation.

Making Money With Amazon

Using Amazon For Targeted Advertising

Amazon offers an Affiliate Program that Hubbers can use to pinpoint ads to what they are describing in their Hubs. Although the Amazon Affiliate Program is scheduled to be phased out of HubPages as it's own entity, Hub Authors can still earn through Amazon Ads as they are included as part of the HubPages Earnings Program.

Amazon Ads can be strategically placed within your Hub Articles. When you are writing about a specific product such as a book, you can place an Ad next to the text. Chances are that if someone from a search engine query read your article, they may be looking for the product you are writing about, and they can purchase the item right through your page.

The eBay Program: Utilize "Real Time Bidding"!

The eBay Program is a great way to utilize "RTB" or "Real Time Bidding" where users can bid for items right off of your page!

"RTB" is a relatively new concept and is growing in popularity fast! Imagine that you are searching for information on a product...say, an iPhone. You go to Google, Bing or one of the giant search engines and you click on a link from the results.

You happened to click on a HubPage Article that gives a great review of the iPhone model you are interested in buying. You read the review and then you notice something on the page. You can Bid right there, right now for a brand new (or used if you prefer) iPhone and have the opportunity at getting a great deal.

Google AdSense

Google AdSense is a program that places Ads on your page automatically, based on the content of your Hub Article.

Google AdSense has a variety of tools available so that the average user can figure out the technical details and how to configure settings. If a user wants to track statistics from their pages they can sign-up and use Google Analytics.

Common AdSense Advertising Terms and Definitions

Term
What It Means
Ad Code
The HTML that is placed on any page of an approved site by the publisher who owns the site, allowing ads to be shown on that page in a specific ad layout format.
CTR (Click Through Rate)
For standard ads, your ad clickthrough rate (CTR) is the number of ad clicks divided by the number of individual ad impressions.
Ad Impressions
An ad impression is reported whenever an individual ad is displayed on your website.
RPM (Revenue Per Mil)
Ad revenue per thousand impressions (RPM) is calculated by dividing your estimated earnings by the number of ad impressions you received, then multiplying by 1000.

A set of ads displayed as a result of one piece of the AdSense ad code. You can create and customize an ad unit in your AdSense account. You can name your ad units and manage their settings in your account.
CPC (Cost-Per-Click)
The cost-per-click (CPC) is the amount you earn each time a user clicks on your ad.
Crawler (aka "Spider" or "Bot")
A crawler, also known as a spider or a bot, is the software Google uses to process and index the content of webpages.
Revenue Share
Each AdSense publisher receives a percentage of the cost an advertiser pays for user clicks or impressions on their ad.

How We Make Money on HubPages Using The Ad Programs

Now that we understand the basics of each Ad Program let's look at how the Ads make us money.

We get paid when people click on the Ads in our Hubs. If you haven't already, read the "Important Message" above regarding Ad Fraud. Remember, you should never click on your own Ads!

For Ads to be effective we should focus on properly placing Ads from the multiple programs available. For the record, AdSense and HubPages Ads are placed by HubPages and we can not change their position on the page. We can however place Amazon and eBay Ads wherever we like!

Now that we are talking specifically about Amazon and eBay Ads, let's explore how to place them and use them effectively in our Hub articles. When writing an article you should supply relevant Ads within the context of the article. Using random or irrelevant ads will not get many clicks.

For example, if you are writing a Recipe Hub consider placing Ads related to food, cookbooks, cookware, etc. If you are writing "How To" Hub Articles, you might want to add Ads to books or tools that will be needed to get the job done.

Whatever you write about be sure to make the Ads in your Hub relate to the context of the Article. If someone finds your Hub Article when they are searching on a Search Engine like Google then chances are they are looking for a product. Why not advertise related products so they can make a purchase right from your page?

Here Are A Few Things To Consider:

  • Remember to never click your Ads!
  • Make Sure Your Ads Look Clean
  • Don't use too many Ads or your article may look like Spam!
  • Associate the Ads with the Topic of your Article

To break it down think like this:

  1. We write Articles and Place Ads in them.
  2. We get paid when people click on our Ads.
  3. The Better the Quality of our Articles, the more Traffic we get.
  4. The more traffic we get, the more Ad Clicks we receive, we make more money!

The bottom line to making any money on HubPages is having Patience! You need to write Quality Hubs on topics that people are searching for on Search Engines. You need to write consistently, and over time you will start to see the rewards of your hard work.

This is an online business and like all businesses there are risks and rewards. If you do your research, pay attention to quality, and keep producing Hubs that get traffic, you will be earning in no time!

Great hub! I've noticed that how much I make per month has gone up since my first month here. The first month I made like $1.50, the next month I made $2.73. This month I'm up to $1.77 already and it's only the 13th! It really just takes time. It's like a plant, you have to water it (write and update hubs) and wait for it to grow (wait for the traffic). Great tips! As always, SHARED and voted up.

Hello Daughter Of Maat! I love how you compare the earnings to a plant that needs to be nurtured! That's a great way to look at it! Keep up the good work and before you know it you will be getting paid every month! Thanks for commenting, voting and SHARING!

Hi JS Matthew, you're certainly doing a great job for the March contest and challenge, and putting together some really informative and useful hubs for us all! I can't thank you enough for all this awesome info. I had often wondered if we were allowed to click on other Hubber's ads...I never seemed to be able to find a definitive answer and so I'm glad that you cleared this up. I'm really happy to say that after 1 year on HubPages I am starting to see some regular earnings now, although it's a slow process. I figure that it will all pay off down the road, if I just continue to learn and grow.

Voted up and sharing!

Hello Cloverleaf! If you are genuinely interested in an ad on another Hubbers page you can click it but doing it often will appear to be "steering" (as if someone asked you to click it for them) and you could get penalized. I have clicked on an ad or two here and there if I was really interested but it isn't something that is recommended. Isn't it great when we start to see the money rolling in? I can wait until 2 years from now to see how much it grows! HubPages is a great opportunity for those who have the time and patience. I made almost nothing in my first year but since last year I am seeing great results! Thanks for your kind words and for being such a loyal follower! I appreciate it.

JS - So glad you are still writing hubs about earnings and hubpages. I am learning important knowledge from you. I'm not sure this is the appropiate place to ask you a question - but, here goes? What does over-promotional mean and when it is checked on a hub I'm writing, should I uncheck it?

Thanks so much JS. Voted up!

J.S.Matthew profile image

J.S.Matthew 4 years ago from Massachusetts, USA Author

Hello vocalcoach! Thank you for your comment. I am glad that my recent Hubs have been helpful to you! I am not sure what you mean exactly. Are you referring to a Hub being moderated for being "Over Promotional"? If so, it means that a Hub has been flagged because it has no value and it is only a teaser or "spamy" as it only promotes another website and contains multiple links to the same site. Here is a link to the Learning Center that discusses "Overly Promotional": http://hubpages.com/community/Learning-Center-Mode...

If you are talking about selecting "Considered Commercial" when we are publishing our articles. "Commercial" means that we have links to outbound sources. HubPages recommends selecting "Commercial" for our Hubs if we want to add Affiliate Ads to them. I think that this is what you were asking. I hope this answers your question!

I voted this up and useful. A really great hub! I have been with HubPages for three years now and it was quite a bumpy road getting started. I now make almost $20 per month with my current hubs but have not written one in several months. My scores do move around a bit and I still struggle to understand completely, however I do see a pattern. Strangely enough, when my Hubber score is lower, I tend to see more page views and revenue. When it is higher, I see fewer page views and revenue, but more comments. This is perfectly fine with me as it gives me the best of both worlds. My hubs would be useless without comments.

I will definitely be reading more of your hubs and am now following you here.

Great write-up!!!

@usedbuckettrucks: Hi! No, I haven't had any trouble and have been using Google AdSense for almost 3 years now. One thing that is important is that you can't click your own ads. If you do you will be barred from using AdSense. As long as you follow their rules and guidelines you should be all set. Hope this helps!

J.S.Matthew profile image

J.S.Matthew 4 years ago from Massachusetts, USA Author

@farru: Hello! I am not familiar with how Google deals with other countries and I know a lot of Hubbers have discussed this in the forums and I have heard that in some countries you have to write a minimum amount of Hubs and be on the site for a minimum amount of time.

I suggest you post your question to the Help Forum where someone with more information and that has dealt with this can help you: http://hubpages.com/forum/2

I hope this helps! Good luck!

Thank you so much for explaining the social network sites and "sharing." I'm never certain if I want to use them, but you make it sound profitable.

J.S.Matthew profile image

J.S.Matthew 4 years ago from Massachusetts, USA Author

Hello there joaniebaby! You are welcome for the explanation. The key to driving traffic from social networking is to find a targeted audience. I have to tell you that I rarely get traffic from my family and close friends. All the traffic I get from these sharing and social sites is by finding like-minded people who like to read and share. Many Hubbers are on these sites and it is great to connect and share with them. There are even Private Groups created by members where only Hubbers can join. Usually you can find people on social networking sites that are interesting to read and if you follow them they may follow you back. Think of it as an extension of HubPages! Thanks for stopping by! I hope to see you in a social network!

Very nicely done! And don't forget "click on the ads!"

That is an integral part. Most times, you actually will find some interesting ads, and you end up getting the products advertised - if not now, then later. I have been a member for quite some time, but must get a good start on publishing more Hubs, and your article gives some outstanding revenue-centric tips! Many thanks! Please follow me, and let's click the related Hub ads!

J.S.Matthew profile image

J.S.Matthew 4 years ago from Massachusetts, USA Author

@tnjman: Hello there! Although we do get paid when people click our ads, it is Not good practice to click on our own as this is considered "Ad Fraud". You can lose your Google AdSense account for life and risk being barred from HubPages. You really shouldn't be clicking other's Ads unless you are genuinely interested in what the ads features. Check out what Google has to say about this: http://www.google.com/ads/adtrafficquality/index.h...

Always be careful when clicking Ads! It would be a shame if we get kicked off for doing something so trivial!

@latishea84: That is a great question! I am not really sure of the answer so this is something I would like to know too! I don't sell on eBay so I have never thought of this before. I suggest that you post a question on HubPages and see what others have to say: (http://hubpages.com/question/hot/)

Please come back and share what you learn! Thanks for asking!

JSMatthew~

J.S.Matthew profile image

J.S.Matthew 4 years ago from Massachusetts, USA Author

@Rockvale: Absolutely! I find that the more research for title and keywords and the more articles produced is really the only way to get earnings to increase. Generally, no one article is a "million dollar article" and sometimes we are surprised at how well one article does and how some articles don't do as well as we thought they would.

The more quality Hub articles you publish, the more your earnings should increase. My first year here I hardly made anything (I only had a few Hubs). The more I learned and the more I published, the more I earned! Many of the top earners on HubPages have hundreds or even thousands of Hubs.

I am not sure what you mean by "blasting" HubPages with good content. If you mean write great stuff often, then yes. If you mean just publishing a bunch of Hubs real fast, unless they are well researched for keywords and related I doubt they will do well and Google make think you are a spammer. Hope that answers your question!

Thanks for asking!

No problem jmicchael1a! I am glad that you found the answer. Be sure not to post a link to the same site more than twice in any Hub or you will be flagged for being "Over Promotional". If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask! Thanks for stopping by!

JSMatthew~

Thanks. Link no more than twice to a specific site. Does that mean a writer could link to more than one site and do it at least twice for each, or only two hyper links allowed for the entire hub? I also understand that the linked website must be relevant to the subject of the hub. Please advise and thanks again. jmw

J.S.Matthew profile image

J.S.Matthew 4 years ago from Massachusetts, USA Author

You can add as many links as you want but you don't want to look spammy with too many links. The links you add have to be related to the title and the content of your Hub. Definitely don't link more than 2.

Check out this article from the Learning Center about Linking: http://hubpages.com/community/Learning-Center-link

Hope this helps.

J.S. - That is without a doubt the most thorough and informative hub I have read on HubPages for any topic. It answered essentially every question I had regarding the various earnings programs and how they interact with one another, what to do, what not to do, as well as tactic and strategy in utilizing these programs. All this incredibly helpful information in one hub (it was a one stop shop.) Making a few dollars is always nice but the enjoyment to just write (about anything) is what brought me to HubPages. Thanks for the well constructed hub and the value it's brought to this writing community.

Hi CC!

Nice to see you on the Hub! What's funny about this is that this Hub was my best performing Hub at one point and then it was no longer a Featured Hub. I kid you not; this was in the number 1 spot of all Hubs in early 2012 (for a few weeks/days?) Funny how things work!

This is a great article full of information that is very useful. Another classic. Keep them coming as some of us do not know this information - like me! I had no idea that you couldn't click on your own ads, for example. Great job! Michele

J.S.Matthew profile image

J.S.Matthew 2 years ago from Massachusetts, USA Author

Hello again misslong123! I am so happy this is helpful to so many Hubbers. I happened to attend a HubCamp in Boston a few years back and I learned a lot from some of the HP staff. I further did my research to find out what types of Hubs do well and which ones don't.

I put these guides together to help other Hubbers, new and old, to fast track their content and avoid making mistakes. I have received a lot of great feedback and I always continue to share what I learn. We are not competitors; we are friends helping each other get to where we are trying to go! That's the best part about the HubPages community.

NEVER, EVER CLICK ON YOUR OWN ADS!!!!! If Google sees this, you can get flagged and permanently banned for "Fraudulent" activity. With that said, I did ask around and it is ok to Occasionally click on an ad if you are serious about purchasing the goods, but I still don't recommend it. I'd hate to lose my AdSense account after all these years of hard work and earning.

I'm glad this was helpful to you. I really appreciate your comments. Best of success and Happy Hubbing!
