Although you can get quite a few readers you won't always get comments.  I always check the HubPages homepage to see if there are any I need to moderate.

Don't fret, not all my hubs have comments in them too.  As long as they are reading your hubs, the comments will come.  You have to let people know you and your style of writing.  This is a good way, by asking this question.  The other thing is going to forums.  Go to newbie section and ask this section... they are very helpful in forums and they will steer you the correct way.  I didn't do this when I first joined.. like you, I just started hitting the keyboard.  Well, I'll go now and read your hubs.  Best wishes.

    Have a nice day,
    Rosie

It depends on the topic sometimes. Some topics just don't lend well to making comments.

And sometimes it's hard to get that first comment. I think people are much more likely to respond if there are a few comments already posted.

It takes a while to establish yourself on HubPages, to get followers and and to get comments. The first comment that I got also took a while and indeed, not all topics lend themself very well for comments. Sometimes a hub does not call for any comments.

It seems that some topics are hotter than others so I don't worry that many of mine remain commentless. I am more interested in the number of visits and overall ratings

Sometimes, you just dont think of a comment that can add any value to the hub- it does not mean that it is not good, it just does not stir you to comment.
