Is it difficult for a homeschooler to reach the top of academia?

How many former homeschooled students are there who have earned PHDs, hold positions at research institutions, publish in scholarly journals, and genuinely be called "intellectuals"?

It depends on the child, of course, but over the years I found that the best-prepared and able students had been home-schooled: they had read more, and were genuinely interested.

My daughter was homeschooled up through 4rd grade, then went to a very small public school through 8th grade.  She went 1 semester in high school and then went straight to a community college.  She is now 17 and is a sophomore at a University.  She will graduate from college at age 19 with a degree in psychology. However my over three kids who were homeschooled on and off, have not done as well.  One son made it through his sophomore year at the university before leaving.  I think it really depends on the child and how motivated they are.

Ummm well, some of the most famous people in history were "homeschooled" and it also depends on the person... but really homeschoolers have no less of an advantage then public schoolers... unless their parents lock them in a closet and never let them out... umm and I believe that's called abuse not homeschooling. wink

    Homeschoolers:
    Agatha Christie
    Thomas Edison
    Mozart
    Thomas Jefferson

I can name more, but I think I've made my point. smile
