Technology & Classrooms - Students prepare presentations for campus websites & BLOGS. Are they safe?
Student generated autobiographies, science and social studies projects are becoming commonplace on campus websites. Are these children safe? How do we promote the important evolution of technology while keeping our student's safe? For example, I am working on a Bio-Poem with my students. Once the drafts are finished the class will head over to the computer lab and prepare their individual pages with images. Each page will become part of a classroom slideshow on the blog. It will contain their first name, a Bio-Poem and include images.
the first time I put my face out for the world to see on the web I was 50 and in grad school
these kids have had their thoughts, happenings and /gulp/ their opinion of their family and friends and teachers out there for a decade or more by the time you got hold of them...theyre safer with you than in their own room I think
I'm not sure what you mean by "safe" but I'm pretty sure their computers aren't going to eat them up and anything they find online isn't going to traumatize them.
Kids are always know more information than we intend for them and there isn't much to do about it other than focus on the quality parts of life. I'm sure your kids will be fine.
I think I haven't understood the exact meaning of your question, but still, I'd like to answer on whatever I've understood. I think educational acceleration has reached enormous levels and there is a hell lot of difference between the education of the 80's 90's and the 21st century. So these things MAY BE safe, until they are under an experienced supervision and guidance.
(Sorry if I understood your question wrong and answered it in a wrong way )

Thank you - I do want them safe.
mesacleanpools - your answer inspires me to write a sci-fi on the killer school computers - lol
To clarify, what I mean by safe is this. We have MANY predators in the world and with a bit of investigating they can seek out prey - they do it anyway. Plus, we all know that most of these kiddos do have themselves plastered all over social networks - very vocally and FULL of questionable images. This however does not show their respective responsibility. But, what about teachers? Educators and districts would easily and quickly be blamed if a child was harmed in anyway due to online assignments/presentations. I'm not paranoid - just concerned and curious.

What do you think about allowing college students to carry firearms on campus?Even though I agree with the right to bare arms, I do not think we need to go back to the Wild Wild West. I can see it now, who is the fastest gun on campus. To cut down on rapes and violence, we need more...

Do you believe a public college president should immediately expel students leading a racial song? This incident happened off campus and was not directed at any individual and did not threaten anyone.
