   Because ever since the dawn of time, fortune has never truly favored the bold--it favors the brown-noser. If there's anything a boss or a leader likes more than his subordinates working hard, it's his subordinates tenderly kissing his butt like a demure, passionate lover.

   I solved the office politics problem by becoming a contract engineer. I set up a limited company employing myself and my wife as a secretary, then recruitment agencies find me work at a better hourly rate than a permanent company employee. I am now immune to politics or worries about promotion.

   Being "liked" and being "needed" are the true pathways to job security.
   If someone has both things going for them they'll climb to the top. Keeping your head down, working hard, and being good at your job isn't enough to be promoted these days. You have to stand out!
   One has to "press the flesh" with the "right people". Attend "happy hours" and other (after hour company events) as well as strategize to get attention from those higher up the ladder.
   Motivational speaker Les Brown once said:
   "Good things {may} come to those who wait but those are things left behind by those who hustled."
   Anyone is waiting and hoping for recognition for a job well done is living in the wrong era. Today you have to either toot your own horn or have an advocate do it for you. Those who refuse to play the game usually end up working for those who did while oftentimes mumbling under their breath how much smarter they are .
   An instructor of mine once told our class:
   "Intelligence is the ability of an organism to adapt to it's environment"
   Too often there are people in the jungle who never realize it or fail to adapt.  They end up getting passed over time and time again.
