How do you feel about President Obama's speech regarding Hiroshima, apologizing for the devastation
& loss of lives that Americans caused the Japanese at the end of World War II? How do you further feel about President Obama indicating that he will honor all World War II dead?
Even though the White House insisted that this trip was not an apology, it is. It is very self serving for President Obama to create this legacy for himself. It was about him and not addressing the issues. I read the whole speech as reported by the NYT this morning. The text seems fine and no reference to any apology but a bigger picture of world peace and nuclear free world... That seems fine to me but it is just pipe dream. I don't think ISIS or Iran or North Korea will just lay down their arms if we did the same.
His message seems hollow. I guess it made his bucket list but not much more. He can finally claim he earned his Nobel Peace Prize. The world is not safer under a weaker America. The question people should focus on in this memorial weekend is what if Hitler had gotten the Atomic bomb first? They were very close to getting it. Will the world be the same? If not, what does that tell you about America and our conduct in the aftermath of WW2?
Japan and Germany and China and all the world nations should thank us for saving the world from tyranny. Japan should apologize to us for the atrocities committed by the Imperial Japanese army. We have nothing to be ashamed of or apologize for.
The book THE RISING SUN details how horrific the Japanese Army was in World War II. I recommend that book highly. Also there is a dvd called HORROR IN THE EAST.
Also, The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang is worth reading. Also google UNIT 731, where the Japanese experimented with captured soldiers with all kinds of horrors...
The Japanese Army did HORRENDOUS things in the Far East during World War II as the German Army did in Europe. People had better read & closely study history.
It took TWO bombs dropped on Japan for them to surrender, because they refused to surrender after the first. And a captured soldier said I don't know what it is, but we have 20 more. Only when told this and facing the fear that the US could wipe out Japan without risk to its people did it consider surrendering, and thousands of military officers STILL committed suicide instead of surrender.
Too many in Japan's military were dedicated to fighting to the death, even if it meant the death of all Japanese.
This is why dropping the nukes on Japan was better, on the whole. It shortened the war by an estimated five years, saving at least 2 million American soldiers fighting Japanese - including average citizens to the child, since their government told women and children to sharpen bamboo sticks to fight in case Americans invaded. In such an invasion, where Japan would have been a more severe version of Vietnam, several million Japanese would have died.
Fewer than half a million Japanese killed by nukes, or several million Japanese AND several million Americans. Nukes were the lesser evil.
Very good point. It is hard to argue with logic. Yet, some will always let emotions rule the day. It is why we need the right people in power to make such tough decisions of life and death.
The use of the Atomic Bomb was horrific, however, it had to be done. The Japanese were relentless, they never would have surrendered. Many believe dropping that bomb saved more lives in the long run. Obama apologizing is just pathetic. The fact that he's been to many countries apologizing pisses me off.
And people ignore their bombing of Pearl Harbor, rape of Nanking, their biowarfare research unit experimenting on living Chinese.
Well; I didn't hear an apology from the president. So I don't feel anything.
