What is your favourite foreign language film, assuming that English is your first language?

I have been collecting and watching foreign language films for a number of years and feel this is something that many people are missing out on.  What films have you seen that you want to share with the world?  Do you watch with subtitles (my preference) or with English dubbing?  What is your favourite?

Well, there's Amelie, starring Audrey Tatou, who was simply adorable playing her role. Then there's Wasabi, a French-Japanese film which starred Jean Reno as a supercop coming to terms with being the father of a lively Japanese girl. It had a pretty straightforward plot, though I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to watch Monsieur Reno kicking ass and eating wasabi (oops!).

As a student of the Spanish language, I have watched many Spanish-language films. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is a good one. It's an early "dramedy" directed and written by Pedro Almodovar about the criss-crossed love lives of two best friends in Spain.

An Italian comedy, starring Ugo Tognazzi, Venga a prendere il caffe da noi (Come have Coffee with Us, 1970) directed by Alberto Lattuada.  The film is about a philandering man and his relationship with three sisters. The movie is a laugh riot.

I recently viewed a superior foreign film.  The movie is Spanish with English subtitles.  Cell 211 (Celda 211), was released in 2009.  The movie is about a riot and rebellion in a Spanish prison. Cell 211 was so good I wrote a review .

Actually, I have two  Black Orpheus and The Pillow Book.

I don't mind subtitles.  I would recommend these as well as "The Scent of the Green Papaya, THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE AND HER LOVER, Delicatessen, WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, Taboo,  DREAMS OF RED MANSIONS, Danzon, TIE ME UP, TIE ME DOWN, I Don't want to talk about it, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER and THE KITE RIDERS".

Enjoy these  The stories are interesting, different and beautifully filmed.  I loved all of these films and own them too.  Please let me know which you have seen and what you thought of them.

The Cook, The Thief... was a great film, it came out around the same time as Delicatessen, another of my favourites.  Some wonderful films here, well worth investing some time hunting them down.

      Cheers

I don't watch a lot of foreign language films but I enjoyed Guillermo Del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" ... for whatever that's worth.

Pan's Labyrinth (Guillermo's fairy tale for adults) has been my favourite foreign film for years as it was just so beautifully filmed and acted, and so very moving. Recently, I watched Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots (subtitled). Don't be fooled by the title. It has a wonderful message and I've been recommending it to everyone, esp. parents and young people. It is entertaining and so much fun to watch, and at the same time carries this amazing message. You've got to watch it! Highly recommended!
