   One of the best ways is to role model and that involves playing with them. Children who have siblings find it easier to share, if they are guided well, than  an "only child". Sometimes you have to allow children to interact, observe behavior and gently guide them through the sharing of toys and items. Older chldren, toddlers and up, can be reasoned with by saying things like "Brit would like to play with your pony for just a little bit.  Can you play with your other horse while she plays? It would be so nice to share."  In otherwords, talking about sharing and giving them options leads them to the idea of it being a positive action.

   I think that if a child is an only child (like me, for instance), the parents should immerse them into either a day care that has other children, so that they can slowly learn how to share.  At home, the parents should teach them how to share by teaching them manners and how to be polite with others. 
   
   If the child has siblings and is not sharing their things, the parents should really try to teach them the importance of sharing.  If the children are in a day care, then the day care staff should teach them that not sharing is being selfish, and that being selfish is not a good quality in a person.

   At least you can cajole them to share those older toys that they have played enough and got bored of!

   We use to go through their toys and wrap them up for Christmas  and give to Toys for Tots...Or take toys to the homeless shelters..The children learn to give and share.

   Bring to their attention how they would feel if the tables were turned and the other children would not share with them. They will see that it's good to share.
