"For many of us, however, "growing up" has meant outgrowing our dreams. The aspiration to write a great book has shrunk to writing advertising copy."
--Your Money or Your Life
I ran across this passage this morning over coffee and it really hit home. These words are worth comtemplating.
Yeah unfortunately we have to make a living in spite of our dreams. Then too, some of us continue to pursue goals that we just will never be able to reach, we continue to asses our talents and our strengths in unrealistic and un-objective ways. Look at all the people the actually believe they can sing that appear on American Idol when clearly they lack that ability. You have to assess yourself honestly and you have to deal with reality as well as understand that there are parts of your that you can't control.
Your Money or Your Life?
I would think that someone doesn't understand money or life.
Dreams are sometimes just dreams; unrealistic dreams. As we grow, or rather as we aged, we become more realistic, and accept what we really are. No more dreams!!!
Writer friends: I too, longed to write a book (words) that would change the world, change people, and change me. I've received so many rejection letters from editors that I wallpapered my entire writing office (not really). But I did throw the rejection letters away so I would not dwell on the negative. Yet, I continue to write---I continue to breathe so I must write--it's like oxygen to me. Writing is like my secret lover. Writing is like my best friend. Yes, sometimes I get frustrated with my writing lover and my writing best friend, yet I always return to the page..to the pen..to the keyboard. They always welcome me back.
I don't know guys. Stephen King kept the dream and look what happened. A lot of writers on HubPages want to get published and gave that up to write here and on similar sites, backlink, bookmark, and so forth. If this is your dreams, great. Go for it. But don't sell your soul for 30 pieces of silver. The lowest person to ever live is worth more than that.
I don't think the authors of Your Money or Your Life are saying you should not do these things. I think they want you to assess your dreams and live them to the best extent possible. Or as Ghandi said: "Live simply, so others can simply live."
It has meaning for me. So I put it out there.
Good Guy: Martin Luther King Jr. too had an unrealistic dream. I'm glad he dreamed it. Don't confuse the bitterness of old age as realism. Or as the bard from Stratford said from the mouth of Miranda: "Oh Brave New World, that hath such people in it."
Gracie Sophia: Never give up. When the dream dies, everything you were is no more. Was it Rene' Decarte that said, "I think, therefore I am?" He could have also said "I dream, that is what I am."
Whether you like Wayne Dyer or not, I like these words of his: "Our reality is what you think about all day long."
Nice. Very Nice.
At least to me.
