Tweaking your hub for Google

   I have been a webmaster for over  a decade have owned search engined directory's, games, ISP's and a variety of other sites. I have also over the years watch Google grow into the mega giant it is today. Now I keep seeing people here wanting to improve there Google traffic. Can it be done yes, have I done it yes a lot.  But I am going th shock you with the truth of todays Google. With the way hub pages while writing here at least don't worry about how to attract Google to your hub. All you have to do is write good content in your words and Google will do the rest. Understanding Google can be a full time occupation in fact a  guide I wrote several years ago for Webmasters to understand Google. If it had been in book form would have been over 100 pages, and the guide was just the basics.
   
   Another Issue that has happened with Google over the years they often change the rules that make some tricks now  a penalty. Now I don't work for Google but I expect this at some level is intentional to slow down some of the aggressive tricks used to attract  Google Traffic. If you go off customizing how you write just to make Google happy you article will suffer quality. My Friends just write, write good content, enjoy and share it. Google will be Google search it out and spider it.

   valid points [webjunkie].  One important point to get a better ranking in Google is constant updates and backlinks.
   
   Just tell, if I update a hubpage, will it gain more Google attention than the one without any update for a long?

   Yes updates do help to draw attention to your hubs from search engines.  One simple way to constantly keep you hubs updated with new content is with an RSS feed or news capsule.

      I have a question regarding this. I had read somewhere that the RSS feeds and the News Capsules are in Javascript, which CANNOT be read by the search engines. The RSS feeds have to be changed (I forget the exact 'techie' term for that) to either XML or HTML format to be readable by the SEs.
      
      Can anyone please shed some light on this??

         I meant the RSS feeds and News Capsule (I guess they are also RSS feeds) that are displayed ON the Hub.

   Let us just not forget that Google is not the only Search Engine on the web.  At this point, Yahoo search accounts for twice the amount of traffic I have received from google at this point.

      That`s a good point. Since I started getting more traffic from yahoo.search my adsense earnings have grown much faster .

   I do have some pages that were page 1 of google for months and now aren't even in the top 8 pages (then I gave up looking).  I've done nothing to them and they get high traffic. 
   
   Any ideas for an explanation?
   
   Anything I can do to get back onto page 1 (and the other pages aren't "better" or newer I just seem to have bumped down)
   
   Is it worth bothering if I get good traffic?

      Its pretty normal - when first published your hub is news - sometimes - (sometimes google ignores them for a a month and then wakes up!) - then they drops back down again. To get it back up the SERPS again - develop more backlinks - backlinks which are anchored on the keyword that you want to rank for. Hubs can rise and fall rapidly if they are featured on the hot hubs page (PR5, counts for a bit) - if you google "popular public hair styles" - http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&a … &meta=
      you'll probably see your public hairs styles for men hub and the hot page (not the actual hub) for the original hub on the subject.
      
      PR on the hub itself is irrelevant you can rank high in the SERPS with no PR , but a link from a PR1 site with anchored backlink is worth about 100x that from a PR0 a link from a PR2 site is worth 1000  x etc

   Julie with site like HubPages you can and will often get very good results for new postings. One one must understand with Google is it is not a cut and dry search engine. It will pick up sites like our beloved HubPages and rank them as "news." News items do not require PageRank for the individual page like a  page that has been up months or years. Once it begins to drop of of the "news" category you now need to work on increasing PageRank. Google has a algorithm that attempts to give pages with higher PageRank better results in searches.
   
   Now there are a few tricks that can be used to bypass PageRank to some degree how ever those methods are hard to do also. Maybe  the easiest ones to do on a  small scale is Name Branding.  If you can develop  a following and use a signature you name perhaps if is easy to spell and recall or a nick name. You then educate you readers that they can often find you buy searching for that name.    I have not done this yet HubPages but I just added the quote "Article by WebJunkie the best junk on the web " to my articles. This is an example of what I mean. No this will not pull in 500,000 click a day but if you gain a following they now have a way to look you up.

   What about article marketing? Does writing a lot of articles and submitting them to the article directories work? especially if you use the resource box to link back to your hubpages?
   
   I have not tried this yet, because it is so much more writing I would have to do, but I was wondering if this would help with traffic to our hubs and make our hubs rank higher in google. Any thoughts?

      Certainly this helps as it is a backlink. e-zine articles for example, is human edited so supposedly is given some extra juice as a authority site...so not only is it a backlink, its a quality backlink.
      
      In addition, if people come along and republish your article in their sites, retaining your author info as they are supposed to...more backlinks are created for you.
      
      And its really not more writing! have you seen the crap thats posted on those sites! A 10 minute summary or rewrite of one of your quality hubs should suffice, you dont want it to be answer all the questions or your reader will have no reason to continue on to your hub.

   RSS Feeds are fine, they all work. JUst submit them to your rss aggregators and they will provide a link.  RSS is the unknown genie in the bottle for backlinks.

    Lissie hit the nail on the head.
    
    Backlinks is the key.  Article Marketing brings backlinks.  Dofollow blogs bring backlins.  Finding others that are willing to link to you bring great backlinks.
    
    Your backlinks need to use the key phrase you are trying to be found for and you should use similar but varied phrases.  Like blue widgets, big blue widgets, blue widget specialists, etc.
