   What kind of insturment?  Musical, medical or mechanical?
   
   From the looks of it, I am guessing musical, though some of the midwife tools I have read about sound like they might look like that.

   okay I'll tell you now! it was used to blow smoke up peoples backsides! evidently they used it for two purposes, one was because they thought the smoke would be therapeutic! bit like colonic irigation, and the other, and this one was the main reason for it, wait for it, you aint gonna believe it! Evidently if someone was drowning, and they pulled them out of the river or sea, instead of giving them mouth to mouth, they stuck this up their, er, bum, and blew smoke to bring them round and start breathing! Total truth! God help 'em! ha ha can you imagine? your lungs are full of water, you are virtually dying the death, and suddenly, whoomp! puff! Owwww! So there you are, aren't you glad you are born these days? I saw it on QI an English quiz tonight, with Steven fry!

      It looks like a bellows, you know for getting the fire going.  If it has another purpose, which it surely does, I am clueless.  This is a great idea though.  The entertainment value of this is so worth it.  Thank You.

      Hi, yes you are right, it was amazing that most of them didn't die of either this, or mercury poisoning, or even maybe just having a tooth extracted! ouch!
