I'm dissecting few revenue sharing websites these days to see if they are playing fair. I don't want to make this as attack fest under search engine eyes, so i'm posting this under 'The sandpit'.
I just checked best-reviewer.com for the number of ads on pages using firefox browser's right click > view source method.
Here is what i see in source code-
Ad 1 - owner (Top ad)
Ad 2 - You ( In-content ad)
Ad 3 - Owner (Bottom/floated)
Edit- *Correction - 5 ads by Best-reviewer owner and 1 Ad by user on current featured top. Date of dissection- Sunday Dec :12/2010, 12:00AM. (GMT+5:30)
If your ad is anything other than 468x60, 300x250 then you can guess how much clicks you're going to get. This site is not impression based sharing so all the clicks on your slot belongs to you every-time. But point is you have only single slot to make money from your content. If maximum ads at clickable positions belongs to owner then is there any point in 100% impressions ? I may be wrong to judge this site here but unless algorithm is turn-based we can't be sure that we're getting more clicks or if those percentage of revenue sharing are even worth it. After dissecting such cases even turn based revenue sharing looks weird to me.
If you're placing your hopes on such revenue sharing systems then make sure you dissect like this before wasting a lot of time producing content. Now you have one more reason to start your own site and keep all the profit instead of shooting blindly.
Hold on.
In your other thread you name 4-5 sites and link to this post. But, this post ONLY covers BestReviewer, a site that I don't mess with because it's by the person who does SheToldMe and I think that site is messy looking and crowded. I do use STM without my Adsense though. Both of those sites use the ad pyramid that you're talking about.
The only real benefit I see to those is that if you refer people you get your Adsense ID on one of the site's blocks. I suck at referrals!
One way to find out whether you're getting the right ad rotation is to log out of the site and then check the page source. Several sites have ways to block ads or different things like our IDs showing to ourselves so that click fraud doesn't happen and to prevent accidental clicks.
One site in particular that you mentioned in the other thread is Seekyt. I have actually corresponded and verified that my ads do indeed rotate properly. In fact I've also made money there already.
I do agree about shooting blindly though. The site that brought about my suspicions is ListMyFive. They're a mini-me-ehow-secret-algorithm-site who also pretty much copied eHow's TOS word for word.
I think having your own website can be very prosperous, so I do have one.
But in my mind there is no reason no to have more than one revenue stream.
Oops.
When you log out and check the page source you have to refresh the page several times. Check for your Adsense ID and see if it comes up. Refresh the page several time like 10-20+ to see how many times your ID comes up and then see if that matches with the pay structure.
For example, on InfoBarrel it's almost always my ID because I earn 90% there. I don't think there is another site, including HP, that is better than them.
To be honest I only see two sites that are going to give me decent Google Adsense income - Hubpages and webanswers - any others, Best-Reviewer, SheToldMe, Xomba etc I simply use to try and get some backlinks, and perhaps some referalls - I never expect to get any income from those....
You mention best-reviewer - at the very least it gives me the chance to do a Top X list - and then link several of my hubs...I'm expirementing with each to see if I get any traffic - and will stop using the ones that send me no traffic....
Wow, thanks for doing that work, Skyfire. I would never even have thought to dissect it quite that way.
I'm going to remove referral links to such sites from my hubs and profile.
great discovery, thank you skyfire. I am planning to start my own blog soon. Need to learn few more basic things before that.
I see adcents and other blogger treats like the rat experiment where the rat is put in a cage and there are levers and they randomly change to give food or nothing, or maybe even an electrical shock.
If anybody is to win in the ad games it is the Owner.
Hi jpwriter,
I did logged out and removed the cookies from browser but instead of logging in again from that browser i selected alternate browser to test this out. Best-reviewer and seekyt are still not being fair as of this date to my content. I'll check again with seekyt but so far for my content it shows owners ID all the time. I also asked some of my other friends to check if this is the case with these sites and found out that the results are same. I also found one bookmarking site where hubpages URL's were over-written with owners tracker which i found very rude way to alter member content.
So far my Whitelist includes :
Hubpages
Infobarrel
Squidoo
Xomba
Theinfomine
Any site other than mentioned in this whitelist is not worth for ME unless dissected.
Sorry, i didn't updated this thread when i made that comment on other thread.
I'm glad that i found out this behavior of such revenue sharing sites before pouring much content onto them.
I think that whitelist is very useful. I have used several of them and have not had a problem.
