    What, in your opinion, is true enlightenment?

      To realize that I am a spiritual creation created by almighty God, that He placed me here for a purpose and that He will recall me to heaven when I have completed that which he sent me to achieve.

      to darkness all is darkness except his own.

      to light all is light except that which is truly darkness.

      so therfore who is asking the question?

      It is when your eyes and ears are opened to the voice of the Holy Ghost.

      Eph 1:18  The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

      For me... It would be the ability to see, admit to and change my faults to better me as a person. The ability to see the good in people and look past everything else in them. Having a complete understanding of the spiritual person within me and to live accordingly. To have true concern for spiritual and physical well-being of our planet, our country, our community and our family. Finding honestly true Peace, Love and Contentment...

      figuring out that all my years of chronic illness were because of food sensitivities - not a curse by a supernatural being that wasn't interested in healing me

      Good question.
      True enlightenment could be described as absolute freedom where no trace of fear is possible.
      It is to love unlimitedly. To be as that which is not born or cannot die.
      It is communion. Communion with the Free Being that is called God.
      It is Love and Bliss...Love-Ananda.

      Allah- the Creator God is the light of heavens and earth:

      [24:36] Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The similitude of His light is as a lustrous niche, wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were a glittering star. It is lit from a blessed tree — an olive — neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would well-nigh glow forth even though fire touched it not. Light upon light! Allah guides to His light whomsoever He will. And Allah sets forth parables to men, and Allah knows all things full well.

      http://www.alislam.org/quran/search2/sh … p;verse=35

      So the true enlightenment comes to one when one sets on the right path that leads to Allah-the Creator God.

    To know one's own self in congruence with God's creations and to realize why you are here and strive to fulfill what you perceive to be your god-given duty

    Flip the switch when I walk into a dark room.
    Might be literal and figurative. Just means I'm one possible source.

    Dark rooms are everywhere.

    If I can do what I intended to do and not get distracted.  That would be a big help towards some sort of enlightenment.

    To be enlightened by God's holy word and allowing God to reveal himself to me spiritually. To recieve the light of truth by seeking God. To know without a doubt God created me to fulfill the purpose he has placed inside of me.

    bring all things to light.

    Just because you cannot see it doesn`t mean it isn`t there or real;
    it only means it is not yet tangible. Bring all things to light -- make all things tangible. It will happen either way, everything in your spirit will be manifest. It is inevitable.

    `the spirit was within the darkness, over the expanse;
    then the ruach of Creator made tangible the spirit.`

    A mind freed from all obscuration.  Enlightenment comes in stages.  The seeker becomes enlightened every second, yet the enlightenment may be incomprehensible until the end when the past and the present do not exist in object form, when desire disappears and we cease association with awareness.  Absolute freedom/enlightenment would be most difficult to achieve while living in 'society'.

      Some people would feel the need to withdraw.Perhaps to a cave or a monastry. However, based on my spiritual practice and my understanding of what that is, the true cave is in the world of relationships.
      That is the true test of living an awakened life, i think.
      How does one lve and manifest that enlightenment in life, in the world.
      I can understand the traditrional view that was  / is evident in India and the east. But i dont think that is relevant to the world we live in now. And yet, it needent take away from the profundity of the reality of the enlightened condition, whihc is beyond words. Being fully human. and being absolutely free of all limitations, of any kind

    Enlightenment came to me in a near death accident - it like somebody has turn on a big light in your head and you see this life as it really is - just a really  big dream that can last 80 years or more.  Just enjoy the ride, because one day you will wake up....

      Midnight Oil,

      That's precisely what great  Hindu saints declare by self experience. Your experience is a proof that what they teach is true.
