Earthquake in Arkansas!!! What the...

   Around 11 pm I was sitting in the recliner reading in the forums here and all of a sudden my chair went to shaking. I paused, looked at the foot rest of the recliner and could see the vibration.
   Went to the Local TV Facebook page and it was lit up with people making comments about feeling an earthquake.
   The local TV is now covering the event. The earthquake epicenter was in north central Arkansas, but was felt as far as 120 miles from the center.
   The estimate is 4.7, but the Newscaster says it will be tomorrow before a definite measurement.
   
   I am about 80 miles from the center of the earthquake area. This is weird for Arkansas.
   
   Note: In the area and surrounding counties there have been daily small earthquakes for several months and not felt across the State. This is an area where there is Natural Gas drilling. Of course the Gas Company Engineers all declare their drilling has had no effect on this.

         I will. This is so strange. In an area called Guy, Arkansas they have been having frequent earthquakes that measure 2.7 to 3.5 for months now. (There is gas drilling in that area)
         The geologists claim the drilling is not causing this. The closest major fault line to Arkansas is the New Madrid at the most Northeastern corner of the State. The quakes we felt tonight are not associated with the New Madrid.
         There were 2 waves of vibration I felt tonight. The second was stronger than the first.

            It's not so strange as it sounds. I've just finished reading Bill Bryson's History of Nearly Everything.   There's a section on plate tectonics and earthquakes.  In it, he mentions that there are many historical instances of earthquakes happening where they  shouldn't be, miles from plate boundaries.  Scientists have no idea why it happens.
            
            So it may just be that.  Though personally I'd be wondering about the drilling, too!

               One of America's worst earthquake I have read is from the New Madrid Fault at the N.E.Corner of Arkansas, S.E Missouri. The Mississippi River ran backwards because of that quake.
               The New report is saying these quakes tonight (3 of them) were shallow and is the reason that the vibrations were felt over such a wide spread area.
               They are saying now it was felt from southern Missouri to extreme southern Arkansas. Even small part of N.W. Mississippi.

   That's scarey Michael. A well regarded scientist from CSIRO predicted the last 3 big earthquakes.
   What is very worrying is that he predicts a 6.5 for Christchurch NZ who are still finding their dead under the rubble of the recent 6.3 they experienced.
   I so hope he is wrong this time! Stay safe my friend.

      I have been listening to the Newscast about the earthquake in NZ. That is a sad situation there.
      What is so unusual is the widespread effect from this quake in Arkansas. I know this is all we will hear about on the local tv channels tomorrow. One local station is covering it now in the news.

         The 2012 theory might be true? Some predictions in some islands in the Philippines said a major earthquake or a volcano eruption will cause tidal wave(tsunami) and will swallow the islands?
         
         And US will be cut in half because of major earthquake? I hope those aren't true

   Another Local person sent me this map of the greatest risk areas in the United States for a major Earthquake. You can see in the Red area in the Northeastern part of Arkansas where the New Madrid Fault area is located.
   
   And in the map before this one, the Star is the location of tonight's earthquake.
