Do you feel that the FDA cares about the health of people in America today?

A course the FDA cares about people's health. The main function of the FDA is to make sure drug products manufactured by the pharmaceutical companies are unadulterated, safe, and pure. The FDA was form by Congress I believe during  Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency to protect people from fraudulent practices from these companies because before that time many people lost their lives taking products that they thought were safe that they had purchased from these companies.

You left out effective.  The FDA won't allow you to sell distilled water as an aphrodisiac, for instance, as it won't work.  Except perhaps in combination with soap. smile

Actually, they will.  Herbal supplements are only monitored for safety and accuracy of ingredient list.   They make no decisions on effectiveness.  Peruvian bat guano could be sold as a cure for erectile dysfunction.  As long as it isn't poisonous and the product really is Peruvian bat guano, the company is gold.

Melphor, perhaps as someone very knowledgeable in the area of pharmaceuticals, you could explain to me why drugs are heavily marketed on television and in magazines. I was taught to say no to drugs as a kid and now as an adult, I'm seeing more people die from prescription drugs than the ones they talked about in school( not including those who overdose). My issue is there are things in nature that are much safer and more effective, but I never hear these things pushed.

Any explanation you could give on how the FDA cares today and how many deaths in a trial study are too many for a drug to be marketed would be greatly appreciated

The FDA was started to put an end to people being killed and sickened by unsafe food and drugs.  That is their goal and the goal of the people who work for them.  The FDA is not perfect and many ways to improve it could be suggested (although in the current climate probably not funded).  It is certainly better than going back to the day when food was preserved with formaldehyde and ginger tonics caused permanent paralysis (a.k.a. limber leg).

You make some very valid points psycheskinner, I do like much of what they do, but it's the high up people who receive all the funds from those wanting to hide dangerous additives from the public and so forth that discredit the good done by the FDA

The FDA is just another corrupted agency implementing corporate agendas. It's original purpose was protection of citizens, however, over the years, it's just distorted truth about some things, so as to control people. Just another arm of the government power. lol

The Food and Drug Administration has been taken over by the Factory Food Corporations.
whose primary purpose is to protect the food business and the public be damned.
"(NaturalNews) After years of sweeping the issue under the rug and hoping no one would notice, the FDA has now finally admitted that chicken meat sold in the USA contains arsenic, a cancer-causing toxic chemical that's fatal in high doses. But the real story is where this arsenic comes from: It's added to the chicken feed on purpose!"

A most emphatic NO! The FDA is a business and like any other business they are in it to make money. Whomever supplies the most grease for the palm wins!!!

And another thing. If the FDA truly was concerned for the safety and well being of the American people they would devote 95% of their manpower into investigating the ingredients that go into all food products. As for the drug part, they should be willing to take them or give them to their family members before allowing them into the public arena.  I read an article from a former FDA worker who admitted to not wanting his family to take some of the drugs that are passed through the FDA.

What makes you think they are a business?  They don't make any money.  They don't have shareholders.  Their employees are civil servants who don't get bonuses and are overloaded due to budget cuts.  They are payed less than average for their skill set (E.G. food scientist, veterinarian, clerk).  Anyone who works for the FDA to make lots of money is an idiot.

ok I'll give you that, maybe they aren't a business but they are an agency. Agencies are headed by someone and we all know of certain agencies that have had major corruption issues. The man/woman at the top is ripe for bribery in order for some company to get their poison out there. In the same token the FDA will suppress something that has a great potential simply because it would take down a lot of influential competition!  One case in point is Dr. Burzynski's cure for cancer. A prime example of the corruption in the FDA. It originally claimed that second hand smoke caused Cancer about 10 years ago or more. Now, with recent announcements, it claims that it's initial study was flawed and wrong. Yet, many laws were passed that have not been repealed. Go figure people continue to believe the misinformation and distortion news of agencies who already have too much power to control.

  9. psycheskinner profile image82
    psycheskinnerposted 12 years ago

How does that make them corrupt?  They follow the scientific consensus. That is about the most neutral option they have.

    1. Cagsil profile image71
Cagsilposted 12 years agoin reply to this

The corruption is in place. Many things are extremely dangerous to the health of the people, yet the FDA does nothing about them and lets corporations continue to produce them. While, spreading misinformation from a minimum of sources, so as to create fear within society.

The example I used was taken from just ONE study, not more than one source, when they made the announcement to the public. And, after 10+ years of more study, they now had no choice but to reverse their position, because they were forced to do so.

I think the old saying "Money is the root of all evil" applies here.  There are many, many things that are done that are not good for people yet are FDA approved. What can we do as consumers to try and change that?

Cagsilposted 12 years agoin reply to this

      Untrue. "Money" is misunderstood.

If our govt did care about the health of Americans, they would not be allowing our food to be made and shipped here by people who hate us. Why do think Autism rates have skyrocketed in the last 30 years. Think... population control.

Where is the corruption?  Who at the FDA could possibly profit?

They are a bunch of civil servants.  They have the same problems any bunch of civil servants always has (underfunded, bureaucratic, conservative).  Corruption is not one of them.

All our money goes to supprt their union pays which a retardedly high and overly excessive, and then add in benis and we are broke. We must crush the unions and remove them from our country's economy and Govt. Period!

Just like any other entity, most of the corruption comes from up top. The underpaid lower end workers aren't the ones receiving monetary gifts from big businesses who profit off of what people die from, it's the head honchos doing that.

Just like they, China, poisoned our Heperin supply, and the FDA was useless in finding and stopping that.
