Um, are we allowed to use our fan mail to promote a book?

   If you want to promote a book, can you use fan mail comments from your fellow hubbers (if your book is a compilation of your hubs) or do you need branchout.com or ask specific people?

      I think that it would be unprofessional to use the fan mail in a context that it was never intended for, especially for commercial purposes. It would also be imprudent because a few negative reviews can be very harmful for a newly published book. So, by all means ask for permission first.

   Selling to people without their permission - is not a good practice for anybody I'd suggest you use permission email lists

      I think what schoolgirl is asking is whether or not it would be appropriate to use what fans have said in their fan mail about her hubs to help promote a book that is a compilation of said hubs.

   I am not sure how HP feels, but I think it's a pretty good idea. It is a direct response from the writers own fan base. As long as the material within the book is truly a compilation of the hubs being reviewed by the fans, it seems like the perfect start to your marketing campaign. It would be interesting to know what HP TOS says, or if it says anything at all about the subject.
   When it is all said and done, Rose, "YOUR" fans are "YOUR" fans.

      I just want to make sure it's ok with the fans- but if they left the fanmail then I'm sure it wouldn't matter if I reposted it?

      I've also been told that getting an endorsement from a published author is great. What do you think of branchout endorsements?

         You know, it is always a good idea to check-in with the fans if you decide to use their remarks. It is more a courtesy rather than anything else, or so I would think.  A quick email to those you wish to use could even create more cool responses in the long run, and a higher level of respect as a bonus!
         Let me know how it goes with the book, I want to be sure to cheer you on in your quest my friend!

            I agree and I do think it is almost a copyright issue. Those comments are the words of the person who wrote them. The minute you put something in writing, it is copyrighted (technically, although there are financial issues if it isn't registered). Anyway, I would go ahead and contact them and ask their permission. Let them know you will credit them for the quote. It is free publicity for them, so I can't imagine many saying no.

      I think to avoid any misunderstanding, I would drop a courtesy email to the writers of the fan mail just to be on the safe side.  Better to err on the side of caution in this case.

   Do not send the same message to multiple users.
   If you want to alert users about new Hubs you've published, you should encourage them to follow you by actively engaging with them on their Hubs and in the Forums.
   
   Do not threaten, harass, or spam our members.
   Emails sent through HubPages are logged, and we will cooperate with legal investigations.
   
   Violation of these rules will result in your account being closed.
