Academic says that the U.S. is due for an unrest, since according to his analysis of History that is the case every 50 years

"Circa 1870, the North fought the South in the Civil War. Half a century later, around 1920, worker unrest, racial tensions and anti-Communist sentiment caused another nationwide upsurge of violence. Then, 50 years later, the Vietnam War and Civil Rights Movement triggered a third peak in violent political, social and racial conflict. Fifty years after that will be 2020. If history continues to repeat itself, we can expect a violent upheaval in the United States in a few years."

Irrespective of this theory, do you think that the U.S. is heading into an era of Chaos?
If you do, what kind; class warfare, race riots, religious, ideological?

Every 50th year is the Biblical "Year of Jubilee". Every seventh is the "Sabbath Year". We have decided to disregard the concept, so of course chaos will result. It has been like that forever, and that is why the world is constantly in turmoil. We refuse to rest, or celebrate appropriately.

What happened to the idea of causality--that things happen for a specific, logical reason (even if we can't always discern it)?  Oy vey!

I don't think the US will be 'engulfed in chaos,' but I do think that there is significant potential for increased unrest.  Ideological polarization is high, and more importantly, economic inequality has increased significantly.  That is a situation which, if prolonged, will lead to violence.

Moreover, so far humankind has been unable to mount an effective response to the challenge of climate change.  In fact, many are still in denial that there is a problem--despite 4 decades of rising global temperatures and such events as the 2003 European heatwave, the 2010 Russian heatwave, the Texas drought of 2011, and the current Midwestern heatwave, which together resulted in many tens of thousands of premature deaths and tens of billions of dollars of economic loss.

Given that an effective response today would still be followed by many years of rising temperatures as the climate slowly reached its new equilibrium, we are going to see much more of the same--which means that this challenge will be layered on top of the economic and ideological challenge already mentioned.  In other words, we have economic, ideological, *and* environmental issues provocative of instability staring us in the face.

Not likely but possible if the ignorant, mouth breathing TeaTards prevail.

Well actually the Occupy protests have been more violent than the Tea Party ones.
Although it's probably has to do more with demographics.

I just remembered that famous investor Jim Rogers always talks about how every decade or so there is a recession. So this maybe something similar, a political or violent way to resolve the perceived misallocation of wealth, and other public goods.

    List of recent recessions

    December 1969(IV)
    November 1973(IV)

Half a century is just enough to see nearly three new generations arrive, and those who lived through previous chaos die off...leaving only pictures and books to warn us of turmoil.

Just about the right amount of time for the new generations to feel so far removed from the horrors of the past that they will strike out without thinking of the long-term effects.

US due for a total collapse (over 200 years - most don't last that long)
Humans worldwide is due to a total population collapse, (food- overcrowding)

I'm sure others know it's coming also, that's why  trying to put in place a total awareness system for riot control, urban training, the “Patriot Act” supersedes U.S. Constitutional law, takes only 3 cities in a riot to automatically  go under military rule.

Need hardened soldiers so that why a forever war against 'terrorism' to recall back to the states - that's why the National Guard is now serving overseas. The only thing left is to take guns away - and every time there is a mass shooting, people go out and buy more guns while they can before unable to at all. Perhaps out of that book "Brave New World" instead of using soma to quiet the riots, medicate as many people you can including children so that be too docile to even start a riot.

If can get away with the assassination of the president of the United States - can pretty much do anything, anytime, for any reason.

"...to disarm the people - that was the best and most effectual way to enslave them." (George Mason)

"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States" (Noah Webster )

    Ben-Hur (1959)
You have the spirit to fight back but the good sense to control it. Your eyes are full of hate, Forty-One. That's good. Hate keeps a man alive. It gives him strength.

When the system gets to the point that the "representative government" is bailing out billionaires with tax payer money as a reward for tanking the economy then it certainly seems like we might be nearing another one of those tipping points Marx wrote about.

The problem with this is that the USA wasnt an incredibly nice place in between those events either. There was a lot that happened in those 50 year periods.
