Hundreds of Muslim mobs went on the rampage in a Buddhist-majority village in southeastern Bangladesh following an alleged desecration of Muslim holy book of Quran on social network Facebook.

"About one thousand angry mobs vandalised and set ablaze at least 13 Buddhist houses and five temples in Merunloa village in Cox's Bazar district," Faruk Ahmed, a senior police officer, told Xinhua from Cox's Bazar district, some 391 km southeast of capital Dhaka.

"The Facebook account holder, Uttom Kumar Barua, in the village in Cox's Bazar's Ramu subdistrict has taken a photo of trampling on the holy Quran and uploaded it from his Facebook account," he said.

Ahmed said after the news about the defaming picture spread, hundreds of Muslims, who were already angry over a US-made anti- Islam film, took to the street on Saturday night.

Will they be arrested and convicted for vandalizing and committing arson? Probably not. And, that is probably the real crime here.

I wonder if the moderate Muslims understand how quickly the radical elements are digging a collective  grave for Islam in the world court of public opinion? With the insults they fling at other religions, the mad dash to violence and the wanton disregard for the sanctity of life; it boggles the mind that the lion's share of the faith chooses to remain so quiet.

I would love to see some peaceful rallies by the majority of the Muslim community denouncing these atrocities. However, I realize they probably live in as much fear of the radical elements as do those of other religions within their community.

Agreed! Also, they seem to be damaging themselves, rather than the targets of their ire. All the deaths in the riots, property damage, etc., doesn't seem to make one bit of difference, except to goad people into provoking them even more.

Actually, there was one in Libya, protesting the killing of the ambassador and trying to show that though they are displeased with the video, they don't think it is worth violence.

I saw images from that rally. It was heartwarming to see the signs people held up expressing sadness for what had happened.

I thought that showed great class of those particular Libyans who stood up with the police to disarm the militia groups smile they took control of their world, by themselves. A awesome group and maybe - just maybe - a hint of a upcoming, tolerant and safe, society wink

Indeed. It shows that there is good and bad in everyone and every society. The NPR story on the ambassador said he was quite loved by the people in Benghazi.
