Do you think conspiracy theory is just getting old?

   I've heard it all a thousand times and more. The this, the that, the whatever, the evil organizations. In fact, just moments ago I received a comment on how FB was invented by the CIA, isn't that crazy? I know some of you do believe this stuff and I don't mean to offend, I know there is conspiracy out there its not really a secret anymore, but not every single thing that is popular is some subplot for a greater evil. What are your thoughts on this?

      Yeah, I get tired of griping in general... sometimes I think conspiracy theorists are just ppl who have taken complaining to a whole different level.

      I would say they are harmless and amusing, except for the fact that influential members of the community sometimes harbor the idea that this or that conspiracy theory is true and they have the power to do something stupid in the name of uncovering the Real Truth.
      
      Also, I find that sometimes when I'm arguing in what I see as a rational and logical way against government excess or some kind of rights violation, someone comes out and joins my side, but then blames it on the lizard people or the Illuminati or some such nonsense.  It undermines what I'm saying by... at the very least, distracting people from a sane argument and draw them into a fun, but ultimately pointless tangent.

   I agree with Zelkiiro. They're just fun to talk and joke about, but I don't take them seriously and I have to admit I kind of look down on those who take conspiracy theories seriously.
   
   They're unprovable and untestable because any lack of evidence suddenly becomes "part of the conspiracy". It's a pointless circle.

      Exactly but when that circle becomes tedious I can't help but just shake my head and not understand. All of this hate and mistrust is stemmed from nothing, its spreading negativity for the sake of nothing.

   'Conspiracy theory' has become a label to slap on anyone at least vaguely interested in figuring out why it is humanity is in such an almighty mess. It's just a media meme, and clearly everybody who's posted in this thread so far has been infected with it. Are you all implying that anybody who might theorise that more than one person might have got together and planned something is a raving lunatic? Good luck with that.

         The intellectual takes any theory seriously that presents valid evidence, regardless of how 'idiotic' it sounds.
         
         I don't close my ears arbitrarily. If somebody wished to present to me valid evidence of reptilian theory I would be happy to hear it. So far I haven't seen any, so it is relegated to 'unproven'.

   This thread makes me think of the Mel Gibson movie "Conspiracy Theory." He thought everything was a conspiracy, so when people started trying to kill him he didn't know which one he'd been right about.

   The conspiracy label, when used as the sole contrary argument, is buncombe.  Instead of a refutation of alternatives, the official story's veracity is accepted and believed in the same way a comatose christian accepts and believes the virgin birth.

         Lol.  Not all christians are comatose. There are thoughtful ones. 
         
         But many don't even question whether a virgin birth actually happened; they just take what their pastor tells them an go on with life, never contemplating how ridiculous it sounds that a virgin birth actually occurred.

                     Just think about it though.  If your daughter/friend/cousin/niece came to you and said they were a virgin, but God had implanted a divine seed in them, I'd bet you'd be skeptical.

                        If her name were Mary and she were written about in the word of God, and she turned out to be the mother of Jesus, I would have fewer doubts... but one of my kids' friends kids... yes, I'd be skeptical.
