How do you use them appropriately so as not to become a 'spammer' and what success rate have you had from them?

Any other place on Hubpages that I link to, I use a referral tracker. It means that anyone who clicks them has up to a 12% chance of seeing my adverts no matter where they are on the site.

From other sites I think I have about 4-500 signups, and probably about 200 hubs from those. I find that very few people ever bother to write a hub.

I've used them mainly to sign up those people interested in earning online through writing. Not by spamming anyone - just by offering the information to those who are seeking it - and yes, I've done alright out of it.

I've had nearly 1/2 million views credited to me from my referrals and I reckon they've earned me about $4,000. I was particularly lucky and had two sign ups who wrote a few very successful product hubs which must have earned me $1000 on their own.

And that's nothing....I remember darkside reaching 10 million views from sign ups a couple of years ago. Only he knows what he's earned from them, but if you take it as $5 per 1000 views then that's $50,000. I have no idea what he did to get so many referral views. The mind boggles!

That is quite astonishing - now I will have to spend a bit of time working out how best to go about it.

I have introduced two good hubs writers - and hundreds of people who signed up and did nothing.

Was the time/effort worth the income?  For me, no.  But I love using referral trackers as an indicator that somebody is out there reading my stuff and clicking .... smile

I read the hubs of people I introduced - and I promote them where I can, although the Hubpages interface isn't ideal for making this a quick/easy thing to do as I have many trackers .... so it's a big tree often ending in "0 hubs".

Thank you earner - I will have to have a go this week-end and see if I cab learn how to make a tracker.  Do you add one to each of your Hubs?  Thanks, Sally

Just for your information, referral trackers aren't allowed on Pinterest, so don't use one there.

That is helpful - thank you Writer Fox, I had not realized that it was not possible on Pinterest.

When I've published an article elsewhere and there is something within that article that relates to a hub I've published, I'll link to the hub using a referral tracker.

I also linked within HubPages. From one related hub to another.

Keep it within what you own/control. Don't drop links on other peoples guestbooks, comments or feedback forms. That way you'll never be accused of being a spammer.

Darkside is the referral king.  It was his hub that taught me how to use referral trackers, and just about everything else on HP.

HEY DS, congrats on the Music Business degree.  It's always nice to see you in the forums.
