What do you think of the recent trend to take someone else's novel and add an element to it? I'm thinking particularly of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Also, someone is writing a novel based on Catcher in the Rye.
I guess I am just sick of the lack of imagination it really shows; having to piggyback off of someone else's ideas seems cheap to me.
Of course, you can argue that nothing is totally original and that Shakespeare would not have written so many plays if most of them hadn't had a genesis somewhere else.
is this legal? does this not go against copyright laws?
Well, Pride and Prejudice is now copyright free.
But in the case of Catcher in the Rye, the author is suing over it. Which could actually result in reclusive author JD Salinger having to appear in court.
Rightfully so. It is his characters. Authors create amazing characters, other worlds even, and then someone else takes it and does what they want? No way! It's like you're taking a part of the person.
O I will have to keep an eye on this case. If the author looses the case, this may open new doors and a new way to make money.
Throw out West Side Story, Kiss Me Kate, 10 Things I Hate About You, etc.
True, but those don't use the same characters as the original. And, like I said, most of Shakespeare was not original either.
I remember someone wrote a book about what happened after the end of Gone With the Wind. Another wrote a book based on a character in Jane Austins' Emma. But the zombie take off of Pride and Predjudice just sounds hysterical. Even if a book is no longer under copyright laws, it's legal to parody existing copyrighted material, I'm pretty sure.

Is pinning to Pinterest a violation of copyright laws?Unless you are pinning your own work and pin someone else's work, you might be violating copyright as you do not own the rights to this work.

Am I wrong about this? I just assumed it was a big no-no to post content that someone else created, and that we found posted somewhere else on the internet or published elsewhere - including recipes that aren't ours or someone else's how-to-make instructions - regardless of how much other content...

I don't know if this is the place to post this question...if not, my apologies!I notice that many people publish recipes on Hubpages and Squidoo (I've done a handful myself). I'm sure some of these people are chefs or graduates of culinary school. Others are just moms and so forth who enjoy sharing...

I have come across a few crafters in the online store like Etsy and Artfire that seem to think it is ok to take a pattern for a book or even from another crafters sites. Any ideas on how to enforce copyrights on new designs?

Is it okay to use someone else's characters in your own book?Is it plagiarism if I want to write a book and decide to use characters from another person's stories? Is it plagiarism if I do not ask or inform the person?
