The Ebola coverage is way out-of-hand. There's no Ebola outbreak and no real threat to the public health in the United States, yet it's covered on every news channel and it's creating a sense of panic.
Want to be really afraid of something? Check out the infection rates at hospitals and how many people die from hospital-caused infections every year, yet Ebola is getting the headlines and nobody is talking about hospital-caused infections. Want a real epidemic? Take a look at the flu and how many people will be killed by it this year.
Why is Ebola causing such outrage?
Because we are chattel and the networks know it. The Opra heard is scared to death and Dr. Oz just may have the answer! Really the problem is that we watch the news with the thought that the news organizations are looking out for our welfare by being informative and timely. Unfortunately what they are selling us is shock and sensationalism. Who cares if Brad Pitt has body odor, but the world wants to know if Brangelina has a sense of smell around it.
How about the real preventable tragedy of the tens of thousands in Africa who die from malaria, just because DDT scares enviro-mentals. The out break of Ebola is just beginning, check the NYC news.
The outrage is the refusal by our own government to curtail travel from infected countries despite completely rational reasons and ability to do exactly that.
And...given the election of a totally incompetent Obama and his re-election, the only answer to the question you posed is Yes.
i'll bet you any amount that there will be no ebola pandemic here. I practiced medicine for nine years. some of the things posted here are the worst kind of fear mongering. either horribly misguided or down right evil.
I would like to think that there will be no Ebola pandemic, but it requires good medical practices to prevent that at a time when there is an Obamacare revolution occurring in the medical industry. A frightening and robust virus coupled with a decreasing capacity to deliver emergency medical care is a formula for a public health crisis. I know that my home state has infectious disease procedures in place to address MERS, as Indiana has recently had that easily communicated disease here. There are epidemiologists who have suggested that Ebola may be mutating, that is frightening.
The most frightening scenario of all is a major Ebola outbreak in Central America. Another frightening idea is that Ebola remains in the system of those who survived it for up to 3 months and can be sexually transmitted. All a deadly virus needs to become politically protected and to spread rapidly is to be sexually transmitted.

Actually the use of DDT is still allowed for public health use, as are many other effective methods of controlling Malaria. What prevents the increased use of these effective methods is money, or rather lack of money Those naughty enviro-mentals preventing good honest food corporations from spraying our food with known carcinogenic's!.
How would you propose that your government should curtail travel from infected countries? Would they compensate Americans who were forced to stay away from home until the outbreak was halted?
Do what the UK is doing and screen those coming in from infected countries, make them aware of what they need to do if they develop symptoms and then apply effective treatment to any who do develop the disease.
The fact that they is such a large death toll in some countries is not because the disease is particularly deadly or untreatable but because some countries have no effective healthcare or public health controls, which my country at least does have.
Wow, didn't take you long to link Obama and Ebola.
Obama linked himself to Ebola.

Are they morons or gullible?
What worries me most is if it is a prank then, what is happening in Liberia? Which virus was inoculated that allows our troops to be healthy and the local population to be decimated? And, if the local population was not dying what is happening in Liberia? Is it another of our coup d'état?

If Texas had Obamacare, the Ebola victim would have had a greater likelyhood of bring admitted promptly.

I constantly have people insisting to me and my hubpages followers that any person capable of curing any one of today's supposedly "incurable" diseases would be either wealthy and in very high demand or dead. Basically, the popular "belief" is if a person such as...

Do you think the US should spend billions on Ebola? Why or why not?More people die of the flu each year, there is one active case in the US and the cases in Africa are now beginning to decline with increased awareness and education about how to stop the spread.

Has your city, town or state had an Ebola scare?Yesterday, in the city in which I work, there was an Ebola scare and not sure if they have determined it is the real thing or malaria or something else. In another city, there was another scare the other day. Do you think there are going...
